Brunelli is a family estate at San Pietro in Cariano, the main village of Valpolicella Classica, between Verona and Lake Garda. The family has been tied to the village since the 1700s. Angelo Brunelli turned the farm into a wine business in 1936, and Amarone is what the house is known for. Luigi and Alberto run it today. The vines face south on limestone-rich ground, Corvina first. You can taste without booking, which is rare round here, and the family lets rooms in a restored country house.
The Brunelli name has been attached to San Pietro in Cariano since the eighteenth century. In 1936 Angelo Brunelli made the decision that shaped the place: stop farming a bit of everything and make wine properly. The estate is still in family hands, run today by Luigi and Alberto.
The vineyards sit on limestone-rich soil facing south to south west. That is warm, well-drained ground, and it suits the local red grapes: Corvina first, with Rondinella, Corvinone and a little Sangiovese behind it.
Amarone is the house wine. Grapes are picked and then left to dry for months before pressing, a method called appassimento. Drying concentrates the sugar and the flavour, so the finished wine is deep, dry and strong. Brunelli makes an Amarone della Valpolicella Classico, a single-vineyard Campo del Titari and a Riserva called Campo Inferi.
Not everything here is Amarone. Pariondo is the estate's Valpolicella Ripasso: a lighter red passed over the Amarone skins to pick up some of that weight. Campo del Maestro is an IGT from Verona, dried in the Amarone way but blended from nine different grapes.
The estate carries the SQNPI mark, Italy's national scheme for lower-input farming, and shows it on its own site.
You can turn up and taste without booking, which is unusual round here. Summer hours are Monday to Friday nine to six, Saturday ten to five, and Sunday ten to half past twelve from April to early October. In winter it is Monday to Saturday, ten to five. The family also lets rooms in a restored country house on the property, which they call the Wine Relais.
