Villa Oppi is a castle estate on the old Via Emilia at Alseno, about halfway between Piacenza and Parma. Stefano Agazzi runs it, following his father Giuseppe. Its own wines come from the hills around Piacenza: Gutturnio, Malvasia and four dessert wines from bunches hung up to dry inside the villa. Partner wineries in other regions make its Barolo, Brunello and Amarone. Guided tastings take place in the halls of the castle, led by Stefano himself, and are booked ahead.
The estate tells its own history in stages. About 2,000 years ago, it says, this was a Roman post station on the Via Emilia, where soldiers and later ordinary travellers stopped to eat, drink and change horses. The wine they drank was made on the spot, and wine was the estate's main product. The oldest wing of the villa went up in 1524, and the estate still prints "since 1524" on its labels. The name comes from the field maple, called oppio in Italian. Rows of these trees once held up the vines, in the old way of growing a vine on a living tree.
In the early 1800s Maria Luigia of Austria was Duchess of Parma and Piacenza. She was Napoleon's second wife. She used to stop here on her summer journeys between the two cities, and she bought the house as a private residence. The estate credits her farming reforms with bringing French vines to the property. It says that in 1820 it made the first Bordeaux-style blend produced entirely from grapes grown in Italy. The two towers came later, in a renovation in the early 1900s, and that is when people began calling the place the Castle of Oppi.
Today Stefano Agazzi runs the brand, having followed his father Giuseppe and relaunched it a few years ago. The wines split in two. The local ones come from the hills around Piacenza. There is a Gutturnio DOC red of Barbera and Bonarda, and a dry Malvasia under the Colli Piacentini DOC. There is a Cabernet Sauvignon, and a classic-method sparkling wine that rests four years on its yeasts in the bottle. The rest come from partner wineries in other regions, fifteen of them by the estate's count. They make Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, Amarone and Chianti for the Villa Oppi label. Every bottle wears a label made of recycled metal, cut in the shape of the castle.
The house speciality is a set of four passito dessert wines. The estate hangs each bunch by hand in the cool rooms of the villa and leaves it to dry slowly for about four months. Crociato is the white one, from Malvasia and Moscato. Fiordirosa is a pink wine from Malvasia Rosa, aged for about a year in small cherry-wood casks and then about three years in bottle. Bonarosa is red, from Croatina. Black to Black is a dark, sweet Merlot that spends about four years in barrique and then about a year in bottle. The estate also makes a grappa from the same dried Malvasia and Moscato grapes as Crociato.
Visitors are welcome, and the tastings are booked ahead through the form on the estate's website. Stefano leads them himself and walks his guests through the halls of the castle. There are three formats. The shortest is two wines with local cured meats in about 40 minutes. The next is three wines with cured meats, cheeses and bruschette in about an hour. The longest is five wines with the same platter in about an hour and a half.
