San Patrignano is not an ordinary winery. It is a drug-recovery community on the hills south of Rimini, founded in 1978, and by its own description the largest in Europe. Wine is one of the trades its residents learn, and every bottle sold helps fund a community that charges nothing for its help. Sangiovese leads the wines, with the Avi Riserva as the flagship. On set evenings the cellar opens for a visit led by the young people who work in it, with four wines to finish.
The community takes in young people struggling with addiction, completely free of charge. It gives them a home, healthcare, legal support and training, and asks nothing from them or their families. Its own products, from wine and food to crafts, pay for a large part of that work.
Life at San Patrignano is built on learning a trade. The winery is one of its working departments, alongside bakeries, dairies, and workshops for cheese, cured meats and design. As the community puts it, everyone here does something for the others.
The vines grow on the Coriano hills, and the wines carry the local names. Sangiovese leads: Ora is the Superiore, and Avi the Riserva that has become the community's flagship. Cabernet Sauvignon goes into Montepirolo, and the red blend Noi comes from the same Rimini hills. Aulente and the Sauvignon Vie are bottled under Rubicone IGT, and there is even a classic-method sparkling wine, Avenir.
You can visit. On set evenings the community opens its cellar for a guided visit led by the young people who work in it. The evening ends with four wines, tasted alongside the community's own cheeses, cured meats and breads. The visit costs 40 euro, runs from 17:30 to about 19:00 in Italian and English, and is booked online on the community's shop.
The community sits at Coriano, in the Romagna hills a few kilometres inland from Rimini. Its online shop sells the wines alongside the food its residents make. For groups of six or more, a shuttle can be arranged for the evening visits within the province of Rimini.
