Val d'Oca is the brand of Cantina Produttori di Valdobbiadene, a growers' co-operative founded in 1952. It sits in the Prosecco hills north-west of Treviso, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape since 2019. About 600 member families farm more than 1,400 football pitches of vines, half of them inside the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG zone. The black satin bottle has been the house signature since 1997. The Wine Center on Via San Giovanni sells the wines and runs three tastings, one built around the steep Rive and Cartizze vineyards.

About Cantina Produttori di Valdobbiadene – Val d’Oca
Cantina Produttori di Valdobbiadene is a co-operative, and Val d'Oca is the name it puts on the bottle. It began on 14 April 1952, when 129 growers, wanting to rebuild their area after the war, pooled their grapes under one roof. Today about 600 member families are behind it, each picking their own small plot by hand. Between them they farm more than 1,000 hectares, close to 1,400 football pitches, and the co-op makes over a million bottles a year.
The name comes from a hill. Val d'Oca is a slope planted with Glera in the hills between Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, a few houses along a road that zig-zags up beside a small wood. The heart of the production is Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG. More than 500 of the members' hectares sit inside that zone, which UNESCO listed as a World Heritage landscape in 2019. Members also farm a good deal of land in Asolo DOCG and Prosecco DOC Treviso. The grape is Glera, and the rules allow up to 15 per cent of other varieties such as Verdiso, Bianchetta Trevigiana and Perera alongside it.
The steep ground is what the co-op is proudest of. The Rive are the 43 named hillsides of the DOCG, and the members tend vines in 9 of them: about 170 football pitches, close to a quarter of all the Rive vineyards. On the steepest slopes machines cannot work, so picking the same area of vines can take up to 800 hours against 150 on the plain. Three Rive are bottled on their own. Colbertaldo has steep clay slopes between 150 and 300 metres. Santo Stefano is among the most northerly, and temperatures there run below the average. San Pietro di Barbozza lies on stony moraine soils below Monte Cesen, facing south. The co-op has also always been strong in Cartizze, a hill of about 150 football pitches so steep and so well regarded that it carries its own name on the label.
The black bottle is the other signature. In 1997 Val d'Oca was the first to put its most popular wines in a satin-finish black bottle, and Vinitaly gave it the best packaging award the following year. It still dresses the Classic Cuvées and the Cartizze. Behind the scenes the co-op has kept investing. A bottling plant arrived in 1997, then in 2017 a logistics hub with a new line and an automated underground warehouse for more than 7,000 pallets. In 2020 every member's vineyard passed the SQNPI integrated-farming scheme and the cellar joined VIVA, Italy's national sustainability programme for wine. Equalitas certification came too, and the co-op publishes a sustainability report written to the GRI standard.
Visitors come to the Wine Center on Via San Giovanni in Valdobbiadene. It sells the wines and runs three tastings. The shortest is a welcome flight of three glasses. The two 90-minute tours add a walk through the winery, one with four glasses and one built around the Rive and Cartizze. The consortium's directory lists staff who speak English, German, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
