Le Fraghe

Le Fraghe is Matilde Poggi's organic estate at Cavaion Veronese, in the low hills between Lake Garda and the Adige valley north of Verona. She picked her first harvest in 1984 and now farms about 30 hectares, mostly Corvina, Rondinella and Garganega. The wines are Bardolino, Chiaretto rosé and Garganega whites, made with their own yeasts in steel, concrete and clay. The cellar is open on weekdays and Saturday mornings. Four tastings are booked on the estate's own website, and two apartments in the farmhouse take guests.

About Le Fraghe

Matilde Poggi grew up in a family that sold its grapes to other wineries. After school in October she went out to pick, and she wanted to make the wine herself. Her first harvest under the Le Fraghe name was 1984. More than forty years on she still runs the estate from the stone farmhouse at Colombare, a hamlet of Cavaion Veronese. The vineyard came from her father, and she hopes one day to hand it to her three daughters. Every capsule carries the mark of FIVI, the Italian federation of independent growers who farm, make, bottle and sell their own wine.

The vines sit at about 190 metres on moraine soil full of stones. The glaciers left it behind when they carved out Lake Garda and the Adige valley. Monte Baldo rises to the north. The lake gives a mild, Mediterranean climate, and cool winds come down the Adige valley. The estate, roughly 42 football pitches of vines, has been certified organic since 2009.

Corvina leads. The Bardolino is four fifths Corvina with Rondinella for the rest, and the Ròdon Chiaretto is the same pair made as a rosé. Garganega, the white grape of the Verona hills, makes the Camporengo white. Four vineyard selections sit above them. Brol Grande is a Bardolino from one vineyard at Affi, in the Montebaldo zone. It spends a year in concrete and fourteen months in bottle before it is sold. Traccia di Bianco and Traccia di Rosa are bottled unfiltered. Montalto is a Cabernet Franc from Rivoli Veronese, raised for a year in clay amphorae.

No bought-in yeasts are used. The wines ferment and rest in steel, unlined concrete or clay. Matilde began closing the Chiaretto and the Camporengo with screw caps in 2008 to keep them fresh, and since the 2021 vintage every bottle has one.

The cellar is open Monday to Friday, 9 to 1 and 2 to 5.30, and Saturday 9 to 1, with a little notice. Four tastings are sold on the estate's own website. The Corvina Experience takes an hour. Another tasting runs from the reds to the whites and back. There is an hour of bread and wine, and a three-hour Bike & Wine ride with a cycling guide. The estate's online shop ships within Italy and Europe. Since 2011 two apartments on the first floor of the house have taken guests, for stays of two nights or more. The Verona exhibition centre is a quarter of an hour away. The estate also hosts private celebrations and business meetings, and provides the wine, the food and the organisation.
