Azienda Agricola Bisol

Bisol makes Prosecco Superiore at Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene, in the steep hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene that are now a World Heritage Site. The family name has been recorded on the Cartizze hill since the 1500s, and the brand carries the year 1542. Today the house belongs to the Lunelli family of Ferrari Trento. Its Cartizze, Crede and Molera are the wines to know. The historic cellar, cut into the rock, is open for tours and tastings by booking.

About Azienda Agricola Bisol

The Bisol name turns up in records of the Cartizze hill in the 1500s, which is why the house calls itself Bisol1542. The modern business dates from the early 1900s, when Eliseo Bisol began trading wine. His son Desiderio, known as Jeio, rebuilt it after the First World War and, after the Second, bought vineyards across Valdobbiadene and Conegliano. His four sons split the work: Antonio ran the office, Eliseo the winemaking, Aurelio the vineyards and Claudio the company.

Gianluca Bisol is the family's current generation. The house is now part of the Lunelli group, the Trentino family behind Ferrari sparkling wine. The winery is still at Via Follo in Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene, and its old cellar sits inside the hill like a cave, at a steady 15 degrees.

The wines are Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, made from Glera grown on slopes so steep the work is done by hand. Bisol keeps the grapes from each vineyard separate. Cartizze, the small hill above Santo Stefano, gives the most prized wine. Crede is the Brut, Molera the Extra Dry, and Rive di Campea and Rive di Guia come from single named slopes. Jeio is the second label, named after Desiderio.

Visits are booked by email, with a day or two's notice, and run in Italian or English. A tasting of four wines takes half an hour; six wines from different slopes take 45 minutes. Add the cellar tour and it is an hour and a half or so. Prices start at 14 euro. The house also runs what it says is the first webcam over the Prosecco hills.
