Cantine Fina works from a low hill just outside Marsala, at the western tip of Sicily. Bruno Fina, a winemaker by training, and his wife Mariella began bottling under their own name in 2005. Their three children, Marco, Sergio and Federica, now run the estate with him. The range splits in two. Sicilia DOC covers wines such as the Kebrilla Grillo and the Bausa Nero d'Avola. Terre Siciliane IGT covers bottlings from Zibibbo, Viognier, Traminer and Merlot. At the edges sit a bottle-fermented sparkling wine and a late-harvest sweet white.
Book a visitBruno Fina spent years as a consulting winemaker across Sicily before putting his own name on a label. That career came with long study of which grape suits which site. It shows in the estate's layout. Rather than one block of vines around the cellar, Fina farms plots across western Sicily. They run from sea level up to 400 to 450 metres, where the Chardonnay for La Stanza del Re ripens. The winery itself went up in 2005, on a rise in Contrada Bausa a few kilometres inland from Marsala.
The planting follows the same logic. Native Sicilian grapes carry the identity: Grillo above all, with Nero d'Avola, Zibibbo and Perricone beside it. International grapes fill the gaps this corner of Sicily suits. Chardonnay and Pinot Nero go into the sparkling wine. Merlot, Syrah, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc and Traminer feed the still range. Picking for the Grillo Riserva starts in the first ten days of September. The crop is kept low, at about 1.6 tonnes of grapes per acre.
The names are deliberately local. Kebrilla, the Grillo sold as Sicilia DOC, does a fifth of its ageing in barrique and the rest in steel tanks. Bausa, the Nero d'Avola, takes its name from the contrada the winery stands on. Taif is the Zibibbo, Kike a blend of Traminer and Sauvignon Blanc, and Vola Vola the Viognier. Mamari is the Sauvignon Blanc and Hanami the Merlot. Caro Maestro, a red, spends 24 months in oak. Two wines sit apart. One is a Pas Dose metodo classico from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, which rests 36 months on its spent yeast in bottle. The other is El Aziz, a late-harvest white under Terre Siciliane IGT.
The cellar takes visitors from Monday to Friday, strictly by appointment, under the Fina Experience programme. The shortest visit is a 50 minute guided cellar tour at 20 euro a head. Two longer sessions last an hour and three quarters and pair the wines with local food. One of them, I racconti del Maestro, is built around the top bottlings and costs 40 euro. Tastings happen outside, on a terrace that looks west over the coastal plain to the sea. The winery also hosts Jazz in Cantina evenings as part of the Marsala Jazz Festival.
One thing to clear up for anyone browsing by place name. Marsala the town gives its name to Sicily's famous fortified wine, but that is not what this estate makes. Everything here is dry still wine, sparkling wine or a sweet late harvest. The bottles split between the island-wide Sicilia DOC and the broader Terre Siciliane IGT. The Grillo and Nero d'Avola carry the DOC, and most of the single-grape whites sit under the IGT.
