Tenute Silvio Nardi is a family estate on two sides of the Brunello di Montalcino zone, in southern Tuscany. Silvio Nardi bought Casale del Bosco in 1950 and made his first Brunello in 1954. His daughter Emilia joined in 1985 and, with her brothers, replanted the vineyards. Today the family farms 80 hectares of vines, about 110 football pitches, on two estates. Two single-vineyard Brunellos, Manachiara and Poggio Doria, lead the range. Three tours can be booked online, and the road in ends at the family's 17th-century villa.
Book a visitSilvio Nardi made farm machinery in Umbria. In 1950 he bought Casale del Bosco, a 17th-century farmhouse on the north-west side of Montalcino, and in 1954 he made his first Brunello. That put him among the first in the zone to bottle at all, and the cellar still keeps bottles from the 1950s and 1960s. In 1962 he added Manachiara, on the east side of the hill facing Castelnuovo dell'Abate. In 1967 he was one of the founders of the Brunello Consorzio.
His youngest daughter Emilia joined in 1985 and, with her brothers, changed how the estate worked. From 1990 they mapped every vineyard by soil, split the land into 36 plots, and replanted. They also searched the old vines for the best Sangiovese, studied about 120 of them, and in 2019 had four Nardi clones entered in Italy's national grape register. Two consultants from Bordeaux, Yves Glories from 1996 and Eric Boissenot from 2009, helped shape the wines.
The Brunello zone is roughly a square, and Nardi farms two of its sides. Casale del Bosco holds the cellar and the offices, among woods of holm oak. Manachiara means clear morning. It faces east, holds the family's highest vineyards and its oldest olive trees, and gives the single-vineyard Brunello of the same name, first made in 1995. Poggio Doria, from a vineyard at Casale del Bosco, followed in 2004. The rest of the range covers Brunello, a Riserva in the best years, Rosso di Montalcino and Chianti Colli Senesi. There is also the 43° line of Toscana IGT wines, a sweet Moscadello and a Vin Santo.
The road to the cellar runs through woods, fields and olive groves and ends at the family's 17th-century villa. Three tours can be booked online. The one-hour welcome tour ends with four wines, two of them Brunello vintages. The private Cru Challenge lines up two vintages each of Manachiara and Poggio Doria beside the Riserva and a sweet Moscadello. Thirty Years of Brunello pours six vintages back to the 1990s and finishes with the Vin Santo. Doors are open Monday to Friday and Saturday morning, and any day by appointment.
