Gruppo Mezzacorona

Mezzacorona is a growers' cooperative at Mezzocorona, north of Trento, founded in 1904. More than 1,500 member families own it and farm its vineyards across Trentino. The members farm roughly 3,500 football pitches of vines between them. It makes the Pinot Grigio, Teroldego and Trento DOC sparkling wines sold under the Mezzacorona and Rotari names. The wines are vegan, and the group also owns Feudo Arancio in Sicily. Its huge Cittadella del Vino winery opens for guided tours and tastings by request.

About Gruppo Mezzacorona

Eleven growers, by the cooperative's own timeline, founded it in 1904, the first of its kind in Mezzocorona. Today it has more than 1,500 member families. Between them they farm about 2,500 hectares, an area roughly the size of 3,500 football pitches, across Trentino and into Alto Adige. Every vineyard is still a family plot. Most are trained on the traditional Trentino pergola, the overhead trellis you see across the valley floor.

The home ground is the Piana Rotaliana, the flat gravel plain north of Trento. Its grape is Teroldego, and Teroldego Rotaliano gained DOC status in 1971. Alongside it come the Trentino DOC whites and reds, Pinot Grigio above all, with Marzemino, Müller Thurgau and Chardonnay. They are sold in the Classici and Castel Firmian lines.

The sparkling side has its own name, Rotari. These are Trento DOC wines, fermented in the bottle by the classic method that Champagne uses. Trento DOC became Italy's first appellation reserved for classic-method sparkling wine in 1993. The group also owns Feudo Arancio in Sicily.

The main winery is the Cittadella del Vino, the Citadel of Wine, on the edge of Mezzocorona. The cooperative bought the old industrial site in 1993 and finished the complex, designed by architect Alberto Cecchetto, in 2010. The site covers an area the size of 18 football pitches. Its glass front runs for 500 metres under a wave-shaped roof that echoes the vine trellises outside. The cooperative calls it the largest industrial wine complex in Europe. Sustainability here is certified rather than claimed. The grapes gained SQNPI integrated-farming certification in 2016 and the wines in 2017, with Equalitas sustainability certification on top.

The wines are also vegan. The cooperative told the Barnivore directory in 2014 that bentonite is its only fining agent. In 2021 it confirmed that its products contain nothing of animal origin. Visitors can see the cellars on guided tours in Italian, English or German, from 9am to 6pm, closed on Sunday. The winery's Italian page says Monday to Friday and its English page adds Saturday, so confirm the day when you ask. Visits are arranged by request with the winery, by phone or email, and tastings pair the wines with local produce. There is a shop on site and an online store.
