Casale Mattia is a family estate on Colle Mattia, a hill 200 metres up in the Castelli Romani, half an hour south-east of Rome. Roberto Rotelli and his wife Lucia De Sanctis run it, on land Roberto's grandfather planted in the 1960s. The vines have been farmed organically since 1996, with olive groves between them. The wines are Frascati first, then Roma DOC, a sweet Cannellino and a few reds. Tastings, picnics and harvest days can be booked online, and the family keeps a shop in Frascati itself.
Book a visitAttilio bought the land on Colle Mattia in the 1960s and planted vines. His son Fernando kept it going, and his grandson Roberto Rotelli built the cellar in 1996 and bottled the first wines as Casale Mattia, the name of the hill. Roberto's wife Lucia De Sanctis comes from a Frascati wine family too. Her grandfather Armando and his son Giuseppe sold Frascati under the De Sanctis label in Italy and abroad. The couple set out to give Frascati back some of the standing it had lost.
They went organic in the same year, 1996, and the family says this made Casale Mattia the first organic Frascati estate. Its trade profile names ICEA, an Italian organic certifier, as its certifier. There are no weedkillers and no synthetic fertiliser. Grass grows between the rows, green manure and organic fertiliser feed the soil, and the bunches are thinned. The harvest is by hand too. The vines cover about 12 hectares, roughly 17 football pitches, with olive groves and open fields between the blocks. The olives go into an organic oil the estate sells beside the wine.
The soil is volcanic, left behind by the old crater that shaped the Castelli Romani, and Malvasia di Candia is the grape planted most. The Frascati DOC blends two Malvasias with Trebbiano Giallo and keeps two old local grapes, Bombino and Bello, in the mix. Above it sits Frascati Superiore DOCG, with a Riserva from old low-yield vines. Cannellino di Frascati DOCG is the sweet one, made from bunches picked late once noble rot has set in. Two Roma DOC wines, Romos white and Romylos red, carry the names of Rome's founders. The reds are Merlot, Cesanese and Shiraz under IGT Lazio. A tank-fermented sparkling wine and two grappas round off the list.
Gambero Rosso put the 2022 Terre Laviche Frascati Superiore among its six best Frascati under 20 euros in March 2024. It found sage and pear on the nose and a tense, savoury palate. That is the bottle to start with.
Visitors come all year. The estate is a 30-minute drive from the centre of Rome, just off the Rome to Naples motorway. The view runs across the valley to Colonna, Monte Compatri and Monte Porzio. An ancient Roman cistern on the land is still in working order. Tastings, picnics among the vines, a sunset aperitif, and harvest and pruning days are sold through booking partners and on the estate's own site. The food at these visits comes from local producers only. In Frascati, the family shop at Via XX Settembre 48 sells the wines, gifts and produce from other local makers.
