Casa Divina Provvidenza is a family wine estate in Nettuno, on the coast south of Rome. The Cosmi family dates it to 1821, and the third generation runs it today. Many of its vines grow in sandy soil full of Macco, a hard stone found along this stretch of coast. The family has put its focus on Lazio's native grapes, above all the white Cacchione. About Casa Divina Provvidenza

The Cosmi family tells the story of this estate from 1821. In that year, by the family's account, the Vatican State passed the land to the Cosmis, and Pietro founded the business. Fernando and Agnese, the second generation, built it up through hard work. Today Adelaide and Piera run the estate with the winemaker Marco Delli Zotti. Their aim is to revive more of Lazio's native grapes. Two of their wines, 200 Anni Bianco and 200 Anni Rosso, were first released in 2021 to mark the estate's 200th anniversary.

The estate lies between Anzio and Nettuno. Olive trees and pines surround its farmhouse and vineyard. The owners keep one wing of the house as an occasional home. The rest holds the cellar, where the wine is made, bottled and packed. Much of the ground along this coast is Macco, a very hard stone. Caves in the rock run beneath the town of Nettuno itself. Long ago they were used to store barrels of wine, and during the war people sheltered in them.

The grape at the heart of the estate's story is Cacchione, a white variety grown around Nettuno for centuries. Local farmers called the trunk of the vine cacchio, and because this plant grows so strongly they named it Cacchione. The soil here is more than 90% sand. Thanks to that sand, many vineyards in the area escaped phylloxera, the vine pest, and still grow on their own roots. The estate owns one of these vineyards, and its grapes make 200 Anni Bianco. Cesanese, a red grape of central Lazio, came to the coast long ago with families who moved their flocks down from Ciociaria, further inland, each year.

The estate makes 23 wines, sold as Nettuno DOC, Roma DOC or the wider Lazio IGT. The whites include Cacchione, Bellone and Malvasia Puntinata, and the reds run from Cesanese to Syrah. There are sparkling wines too, and a sweet passito, Dositheo, made from grapes left to dry on the vine. 200 Anni Bianco is Cacchione picked slightly overripe, then fermented and aged in new oak barrels. It leads the estate's entry in Gambero Rosso's wine guide. The same guide lists about 60 hectares of vines, roughly 84 football pitches, and 500,000 bottles a year. In 2024 and 2025 its wines won medals at Vinitaly, Mundus Vini, 5StarWines, Syrah du Monde and Wine Hunter.

Visits are by booking, on the estate's website or through Winedering. The two-hour tour takes in the vineyard, the cellar, the estate's museum, the barrel room and a terrace with wide views. Along the way you taste the estate's wines, with finger food. A three-hour version pours four wines with a full meal, served in the crystal room. Tours run in English or Italian, and children pay less. The estate shop and tasting room sit next to the cellar. In the old town of Nettuno, the estate also runs Enoteca 1821, a wine shop with a tasting corner.
