47 Anno Domini is an organic estate at Roncade, in the province of Treviso, about 16 miles from Venice. Forty hectares of vines sit on heavy clay between the Sile and the Piave rivers. The cellar in the middle of them is a design piece in wood, glass and steel. Glera and Prosecco DOC lead, and the local red Raboso is dried into Malanotte del Piave DOCG. The estate holds organic and vegan certification and generates as much power as it uses. Tastings can be booked ahead.
See the winesThe land here is clay: fertile, full of minerals, and hard to work. The estate says as much itself, and treats it as the reason its wines taste the way they do. Forty hectares of vines run right up to the cellar door.
That cellar is not a shed. It was built to be looked at, in wood, glass and steel. A long window juts out over the rows, and the estate calls it The Eye. Inside there is a shop and rooms for parties and weddings. A small church stands out among the vines.
Glera is the main grape and Prosecco DOC the main wine. It is made both lightly fizzy and fully sparkling. Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Raboso grow here too.
Raboso is the local red. It is sharp and firmly tannic, and hard to tame young. The estate dries the grapes and turns it into Malanotte del Piave DOCG, named after a medieval village nearby.
The whole estate is farmed organically and holds organic and vegan certification. Fertiliser is plant matter only, never animal and never synthetic. Water reaches the roots through drip lines rather than sprinklers. The winery generates as much power as it uses.
Not every bottle from here carries the estate's own name. Merchants buy the wine and sell it under labels of their own. That is how a Prosecco made at Roncade can reach a British shop under a name you will not see anywhere else on this site.
You can taste here. The estate runs tastings and keeps a shop, and it is set up for events. Ring or write ahead to be sure of a slot. The address sits on the old Treviso to the sea road, so it is an easy stop on the way to the coast.
