Tasting Notes

What Alessandro Gallici Prosecco Anniversario tastes like

Lemon, citrus and grapefruit lead in Vivino's 50 written reviews of this Prosecco, with 30 mentions, then apple, pear and melon with 23. A few drinkers find honey and a stony note. Laithwaites describes bright, intense lemon and ripe peach. 47 Anno Domini's own organic Prosecco from the same estate is fruity and floral in the same way.

Palate

Light, soft and gently fizzy at 11%, with a creamy mousse. The Glera comes from 47 Anno Domini's certified organic vineyard at Roncade, between Treviso and the Venetian lagoon. Sea breezes and plenty of sun ripen the grapes there. It is made sparkling in tank, the usual Prosecco method, so the peach and green apple stay fresh. Laithwaites' US arm files it as medium rather than dry.

Finish

Clean and fairly long for a Prosecco. Laithwaites calls it long and toasty with ripe peach; its US arm finds tropical fruit and green apple carrying across a long finish.

Overall

Made for Laithwaites' 50th birthday and kept in the range because it proved so popular, this is the top of Gallici's range at Laithwaites. Single-vintage, organic grapes, 4.1 from 276 Vivino ratings, with the 2018 (4.3) the best-liked year and the 2020 (3.7 from 85 ratings) the least. Drink the 2024 by the end of 2027, as an aperitif or with fried starters and shellfish. £14 a bottle in a mixed dozen.

Wine fit score

How Prosecco Anniversario scores on the Italian Wine Fit Score

Four scores out of ten. Prosecco Anniversario scores highest as an introduction to sparkling wine, then for food. It also scores well for everyday drinking at £14 a bottle in a dozen, and for an occasion in its anniversary bottle.

Best intro to this style 9.0/10

Soft bubbles, peach and lemon fruit, low alcohol and a touch of sweetness: the easiest style of sparkling wine there is. One US customer's five-star review on Laithwaites' site calls it the best Prosecco they have ever had.

Best with food 7.2/10

Light, lemony and gently off-dry: right for fried starters, cured meat, shellfish and light pasta. Wrong for red meat, rich stews and puddings.

Best everyday bottle 7.0/10

At £14 in a mixed dozen and 11% alcohol it is a Friday-night aperitif. Only the £7.99 delivery charge on small orders counts against it.

Best for an occasion 6.6/10

Created for Laithwaites' 50th anniversary and sold in what the merchant calls a unique bottle, it looks the part at a party. It is still a Prosecco DOC, not a Champagne or a Franciacorta.

Best value 6.2/10

£16 a bottle at Laithwaites, or £14 in a mixed dozen, for a single-vintage Prosecco DOC from organic grapes rated 4.1 by 276 Vivino drinkers. 47 Anno Domini sells its own organic Prosecco DOC on its website for €9.50.

Best for cellar 1.0/10

Prosecco is made to drink young and Laithwaites gives the 2024 a drink-by date of December 2027. Keep it in the fridge door, not the cellar.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Prosecco DOC rules, and what makes this one a Millesimato

Prosecco DOC must be at least 85% Glera from nine provinces of Veneto and Friuli. A Millesimato carries a harvest year, and at least 85% of the wine must come from that year. This one is 2024 Glera from 47 Anno Domini's organic vineyard at Roncade in the Treviso province, at 11% alcohol.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Prosecco is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

  1. 01

Certified organic grapes from one estate

    Cost up

The Glera comes from 47 Anno Domini's certified organic vineyard at Roncade, farmed with plant-based fertilisers, according to Laithwaites' US site. Organic farming means more work per vine than in the conventional vineyards that feed most Prosecco brands.

  2. 02

A single vintage rather than blended tank stock

    Cost up

This is a Millesimato: at least 85% from the 2024 harvest, not a blend of years. Big Prosecco brands blend across years and buy grapes across nine provinces, which is cheaper.

  3. 03

    A special anniversary bottle

    Cost up

Laithwaites created the wine for its 50th year and sells it in what it calls a unique bottle; its US arm describes the bottle as jewel-like. Special glass and packaging cost more per bottle than a standard Prosecco bottle.

  4. 04

UK duty and VAT on an 11% sparkling wine

    Cost up

At 11% alcohol UK duty is £2.53 a bottle at the February 2026 rate of £30.62 per litre of pure alcohol, and VAT on the £16 Laithwaites price adds £2.67. About £5.20 of every bottle goes to the Treasury.

  5. 05

A merchant's own label, sold direct

    Cost down

Laithwaites owns the label and sells it direct, with no wholesaler in between, which is why the mixed-dozen price drops to £14. 47 Anno Domini's own organic Prosecco DOC sells on its website for €9.50.

Food Pairing

Fried starters, cured meat and shellfish: what to eat with Prosecco Anniversario

A light, lemony, gently off-dry Prosecco at 11% wants salty, fried or delicate food, not the main course. Vivino's experts list shellfish, vegetarian dishes, appetisers and cured meat; Laithwaites' US arm adds chicken, pork, salads, seafood and pasta.

Acidity matching Strong match

Fried starters and nibbles

Bubbles and lemony acidity scrub the fat from anything fried. That is why a Prosecco works with a plate of arancini and a still white does not. Vivino's experts put appetisers and snacks on the list for this wine.

Try with: Arancini · Gnocco fritto · Pizza Fritta · Fish and Chips · More pairings →

Salt balance Strong match

Cured meats and salty cheese

Salt makes the peach and lemon fruit of an off-dry Prosecco taste rounder, and the fizz lifts the fat of prosciutto and hard cheese. Cured meat is on Vivino's list and on Laithwaites' US list for this wine.

Try with: Vitello Tonnato · Frico · Gnocco fritto · Cheese board · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Shellfish and light seafood

The citrus that Vivino drinkers taste in this wine does the job of a squeeze of lemon on oysters and prawns, and 11% alcohol never overwhelms delicate fish. Shellfish leads Vivino's list; Laithwaites' US arm names seafood.

Try with: Oysters · Salt and pepper prawns · Steamed sea bass · Scottish Smoked Salmon

Body matching Good match

Light pasta, risotto and vegetable dishes

A light, soft sparkling wine matches the weight of a spring risotto or a tomato salad without flattening it. Its peach fruit sits happily next to sweet peas and fresh cheese. Vivino's experts list vegetarian dishes; Laithwaites adds salads and pasta.

Try with: Risi e bisi · Insalata Caprese · Pumpkin risotto · Orecchiette con cime di rapa · More pairings →

Sweet balance Good match

Mildly spiced Asian dishes

The touch of sweetness in an off-dry Prosecco cools mild chilli and matches the sweet-salty sauces of Thai and Japanese starters. The bubbles refresh the palate between bites. Keep the heat mild; a fierce curry is on the avoid list.

Try with: Chicken pad thai · Satay · Gai Yang · Prawn Tempura · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Red meat, rich stews and very sweet puddings

A light 11% sparkler vanishes next to steak or a game stew, and a sweet pudding makes an off-dry Prosecco taste thin and sour. Fierce chilli does the same. Keep it for the start of the meal.

Skip with: Fiorentina steak · Venison Stew · Chocolate cake · Cheesecake · Lamb bhuna · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Keeping Prosecco Anniversario: drink it by the end of 2027

This is not a wine to keep. Laithwaites gives the 2024 a drink-by date of 31 December 2027, and Prosecco loses its fresh peach and lemon fruit long before it gains anything. Store it cool and upright and chill it well before opening.

Common Questions

It is a Laithwaites label. The merchant says its partnership with winemaker Alessandro Gallici goes back over twenty years, and that he created this special Prosecco to mark the company's 50th year. The grapes come from 47 Anno Domini, a certified organic estate at Roncade near Treviso, and the wine is made at a cellar nearby.

From 47 Anno Domini at Roncade, about 16 miles north of Venice in the province of Treviso. The estate takes its name from the Roman road built in 47 AD that borders it. It farms organically with plant-based fertilisers and grows Glera, the Prosecco grape, on soils cooled by sea breezes.

Lemon and ripe peach with a creamy mousse, light and soft at 11% with a touch of sweetness. Vivino drinkers mention lemon and citrus most, then apple, pear and melon; Laithwaites calls the finish long and toasty.

Just off-dry, like most Prosecco. Laithwaites lists it as dry in the UK and as medium in the US. 47 Anno Domini's own organic Prosecco from the same estate is labelled extra dry, which in sparkling wine means a touch of sweetness. It is nowhere near a sweet wine.

£16 a bottle at Laithwaites, or £14 a bottle when you mix 12 or more. Delivery is free on 12 bottles and £7.99 below that. Laithwaites is the only UK shop we track with it.

Fried starters, cured meat and hard cheese, shellfish and light pasta or risotto. Vivino's experts list shellfish, vegetarian dishes, appetisers and cured meat; Laithwaites' US arm adds chicken, pork, salads, seafood and pasta. Avoid red meat, rich stews and sweet puddings.
