Palagetto is a family wine estate 1.5 km from the historic centre of San Gimignano, about an hour's drive from Florence. Luano Niccolai began buying land here in the early 1980s. His daughter Sabrina owns it today and runs it with the next generation, Arianna and Niccolò. Its key wines include Vernaccia di San Gimignano, the white named after the town. The reds include Chianti Colli Senesi and Sottobosco. Visitors book tastings, light lunches, picnics, truffle hunts and cooking classes, and can stay in the family's apartments, suites or villa.
The Niccolai family come from San Gimignano. In the early 1980s Luano Niccolai began buying land around the town, piecing an estate together from small plots and forgotten vineyards. His daughter Sabrina is the owner today. She added vineyards, modernised the cellar and steered the estate towards organic certification. Her daughter Arianna took on a leading role young and has brought the wines to a new audience abroad. Arianna's brother Niccolò is part of the new generation too, and one of the wines carries his name.
The vineyards behind most of the wines lie between 280 and 320 metres above sea level, on the slopes around the town. The estate's wine sheets describe picking by hand into crates, with a second sort in the cellar. Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a DOCG white, comes in three still versions. There is a plain Vernaccia, a Santa Chiara selection from the vineyard of that name, and a Riserva. The reds start with Chianti Colli Senesi, the Chianti of the hills around Siena. Sottobosco is a red under the San Gimignano DOC name. Uno di Quattro, which means one of four, is a range of four reds, each from a single grape. Three of them, the Sangiovese, Merlot and Syrah, carry the San Gimignano DOC name. They come from higher vineyards at 380 to 420 metres. The fourth, a Cabernet Franc, is sold as Toscana IGT. So is Arnilù, a Chardonnay.
The winery is open every day from 10:00 to 18:00, and every visit is booked ahead. The shortest tasting, Experience Palagetto, takes 45 minutes and pours six wines, with the estate's olive oil on bruschetta. A one-hour tasting is given over to Vernaccia alone, from the sparkling A Lui to the Riserva, with four cheeses and honey. Longer visits add a Tuscan light lunch, a picnic basket in the vines with a view of the town's towers, or a cooking class. There is also a truffle hunt in the nearby woods with expert hunters and their dogs. A guided tour of the vineyards and cellar can be added for EUR 10 a person.
Palagetto also makes extra virgin olive oil from hand-picked olives grown on the estate, and pours it at several of its tastings. One light lunch is built around the oil, tasted plain and flavoured. For an overnight stay the family has three places to offer. Agriturismo Torre Palagetto has apartments with kitchens. Palagetto di Sotto has suites without kitchens, close to the cellar and tasting rooms. Villa Arnilù, with its own pool and a view of the San Gimignano skyline, is let as a whole.
