Bindi Sergardi is a family estate in the hills between Siena and the Chianti Classico country. The family has made wine around Siena for 23 generations, since 1349. Two sisters, Alessandra and Maddalena, run it today. Sangiovese leads across three estates, from Chianti Classico at Mocenni to Vino Nobile country at Chiusi. Wine Spectator gave 95 points to both the 2019 Mocenni 89 Gran Selezione and the 2021 Mocenni 91. Tastings and tours happen at Tenuta Mocenni in Vagliagli, a hilltop estate that began as a fortress in 1067.
Book a visitThe Bindi Sergardi story starts in 1349. The family came from Montalcino, settled in Siena, and spent the next six centuries as landowners, captains, bishops and wine growers. One ancestor, Niccolò, defended Siena's freedom against the armies of Charles V in the 1550s. At the I Colli estate, Bishop Achille Sergardi received the emperor's envoys to negotiate peace for the city.
The modern company owes most to a woman. Chiara, a war widow who had lost her own father at 17, carried the farms through the 1940s and passed on what the family calls her resilience. Today her granddaughters run the estates: Alessandra Casini Bindi Sergardi, and her sister Maddalena, who came home after years working abroad. Their father Nicolò Casini shaped the company they inherited.
The wines come from three estates around Siena. Tenuta Mocenni, at 500 metres near Vagliagli, is the Chianti Classico heart: 40 hectares led by Sangiovese, planted in a south-facing bowl of thin, stony soil ringed by woods. One parcel, number 89, gives its name to Mocenni 89, the estate's Gran Selezione. Tenuta I Colli, the family's historic seat near Monteriggioni, grows Chianti Classico on its Vagliagli side as well as Chianti and Chianti Colli Senesi. Tenuta Marcianella, south at Chiusi and Montepulciano, adds Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Syrah on old seabed clay and sand.
Sangiovese leads the range. La Ghirlanda and Ser Gardo are the everyday Chianti Classico faces; Calidonia and I Colli are the Riservas. The critics' favourites sit at the top: Wine Spectator scored the 2021 Mocenni 91, a Cabernet Sauvignon, 95 points and named it a Top Pick, and gave 95 to the 2019 Mocenni 89 as well. The one white, Bindo, blends Trebbiano and Malvasia.
Visiting is simple to arrange. The tasting room at Mocenni takes online bookings on the estate's own site. The menu starts with a 90-minute, four-wine Premium Tasting from 45 euros. From there it steps up: a five-wine tasting with Tuscan food, a light lunch, a vineyard picnic, or a sunset dinner among the vines. Google reviewers rate the visits 5.0. The same experiences also appear on partner booking sites.
