Belguardo

Tenuta Belguardo is the Mazzei family's Maremma estate, on the hills between Grosseto and Montiano a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The family behind Castello di Fonterutoli bought it in the mid 1990s and farms 48 hectares of vines here. Sea breezes cool the vines through the hot Maremma summer. Reds lead, with Cabernet, Sangiovese and the native Ciliegiolo, and Vermentino for the whites. The flagship Riserva, the estate notes, has made Wine Spectator's Top 100. Tastings run Monday to Saturday at the estate's enoteca, from 20 euro.

About Belguardo

The Mazzei family has made Tuscan wine for six centuries from Castello di Fonterutoli in Chianti Classico. In the mid 1990s it crossed the region to the Maremma and bought Belguardo, on the hills between Grosseto and Montiano. The sea sits close enough to matter: steady breezes cool the vines through the hot Maremma summer.

The property covers 94 hectares, 48 of them planted. The ground is fine gravel from broken sandstone, mixed with alberese, the local limestone and clay rock. The vines sit between 100 and 180 metres. Reds lead: Cabernet, Sangiovese, Alicante, Syrah and the native Ciliegiolo, with Vermentino for the whites.

In the cellar the grapes ferment in steel and concrete vats, then age in wooden barrels or terracotta jars. Belguardo V, the estate's top Vermentino, takes the terracotta route. The flagship red, the Tenuta Belguardo Riserva, blends Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Cabernet Franc. The estate notes its place in Wine Spectator's Top 100 world wines. Bronzone, a single-vineyard Morellino di Scansano Riserva, and a curious white made from red Grenache grapes round out the range.

Visits centre on the Enoteca di Belguardo, a Maremman country house at Poggio La Mozza. The full range is on sale, and tastings can be arranged inside or out on the terrace. Four tours run Monday to Saturday. They range from a 45-minute cellar visit with four wines at 20 euro to a 90-minute private tasting of two top wines across three vintages each. Booking is required by phone or email.

This site lists 14 of the estate's wines across Maremma Toscana DOC, Morellino di Scansano and Toscana IGT.

Belguardo Wine Tour at Belguardo Tour

Belguardo Wine Tour

1h From €20 per person

From Chianti Classico to the Maremma countryside. It was here, in the 1990s, that the Mazzei family chose to transfer its centuries-old savoir-faire, transforming Tenuta Belguardo into one of the most important wineries in the area. A 94-hectare property, part of which you will explore accompanied by a sommelier during this wine tasting and cellar tour. The tour will begin with a short walk through the vineyard, before heading into the cellar. We'll visit the vat room, where the grapes ferment in steel and concrete vats. We'll then continue into the barrel room, where the wines age in wooden barrels or special terracotta amphorae, as is done for the prized Belguardo V CRU. We'll taste four Tenuta Belguardo - Mazzei wines, accompanied by breadsticks and taralli.
