Tenute Baglio Passofondo Rural
Tenute Baglio Passofondo is a wine and olive estate in the hills outside Alcamo, in north-west Sicily. A 19th-century farm courtyard stands at its centre, restored as a hotel with ten suites, a pool and a wellness area. The vines include Zibibbo, Catarratto and Calabrese, the local name for Nero d'Avola. Guests can book a tasting of five estate wines, a walk or e-bike ride in the vines, a cooking class or a picnic. The sea at Castellammare del Golfo and the temple of Segesta are a few kilometres away.

About Tenute Baglio Passofondo Rural
Alcamo sits in the hills between Palermo and Trapani. It gives its name to a DOC best known for white wines. The land around the town is farmed with vines and with olive trees that are centuries old. Tenute Baglio Passofondo lies in those hills at kilometre 7 of the provincial road 119, just off the A29 motorway from Palermo to Mazara del Vallo. A baglio is the old farm courtyard of western Sicily: a square of stone buildings around a yard, with one gate onto the fields. This one was built in the 19th century and has kept its shape.
The estate grows Zibibbo, Catarratto and Calabrese, the grape most of Sicily calls Nero d'Avola. It also names a native Alcamo white among its vines, and presses olive oil from the old groves. The wines carry the Passofondo name, and the labels seen at the estate run from an Alcamo DOC white to a Zibibbo, a Grillo, a Syrah and a Nero d'Avola. The owners describe the farming as sustainable and the wines as organic. The estate names no certifying body on its site. A tasting of five of its own labels is the core visit. The listings on this page take bookings for it, and for a walk in the vines, an e-bike ride with a tasting, or a picnic. A walk in the olive grove is about the estate's oil, with Sicilian dishes to taste it on. There are cooking classes too, in Sicilian dishes, pizza and pastry.
The old courtyard is now a small hotel. Ten suites sit inside the stone buildings, in four types. They have air conditioning, exposed stone walls and fireplaces for the winter, and some have a Jacuzzi. There is a wellness area with baths and a treatment room, a pool, and a hall in the old house where dinners are served. The Michelin Guide lists it in its hotel selection. The estate also hosts weddings and events, in the courtyard, in the garden below the vineyard, among the carob trees and in the former cooperage.
It is a good base for the north-west corner of the island. Castellammare del Golfo and the coves of Scopello are a few kilometres north, and San Vito Lo Capo a little further on. The Greek temple of Segesta stands on its hill nearby. Alcamo itself is a short drive away, and the A29 puts both Palermo and Trapani within reach for a day out.
