Maugeri
Maugeri is a family wine estate in Milo, on the eastern slope of Mount Etna in Sicily. Renato Maugeri and his daughters Carla, Michela and Paola brought the family's abandoned vineyard back to life in 2015. Their terraces sit about 700 metres up, with the Ionian Sea in view. They make white wines from Carricante and Catarratto, plus one rosé. Milo is the only place on Etna whose whites can be sold as Etna Bianco Superiore. You can book a walk through the vines with a tasting.

About Maugeri
The land in Milo has always belonged to the Maugeri family, and they once made wine there for their own table. Later the vineyard was abandoned. In 2015 Renato Maugeri and his three daughters, Carla, Michela and Paola, set out to bring it back. They restored the old dry-stone walls of lava rock and planted new vines on the terraces. Their first vintage was bottled in 2020. Emiliano Falsini, a consultant winemaker, has worked with them from the start.
Milo looks out over the Ionian Sea from the eastern side of the volcano. The family's 83 terraces run through the Milo woods at about 700 metres. Carla Maugeri says it rains more here than on the rest of Etna, and salty sea winds dry the vines after the rain. The grapes keep their fresh acidity, which suits white wine. The Etna DOC rules keep the name Etna Bianco Superiore for wine from Milo's vineyards, made mostly from Carricante. So the family chose to grow almost nothing but white grapes.
Every vine is grown as a low bush, the old Etna alberello way. Carricante goes into three Etna Bianco Superiore wines, each from its own patch of ground. Contrada Volpare is the one they make most of. Frontebosco comes from a south-facing plot beside the wood, and Frontemare from a vineyard in Praino that faces the sea. Catarratto, planted on the shadier terraces, makes a Terre Siciliane IGT white. A small plot of Nerello Mascalese gives the only wine that is not white, an Etna Rosato. There is no red.
Gambero Rosso's Vini d'Italia 2025 guide named Maugeri its Emerging Winery. It also gave the 2023 Volpare white its top award, Tre Bicchieri. James Suckling ranked the 2023 Frontemare eighth in his Top 100 Wines of Italy for 2025.
The farming is organic, and the only sprays are sulphur and copper. The estate is a member of SOStain, a Sicilian programme for greener wine growing. Since 2024, Carla says, its bottles have been made in Sicily from 90 percent recycled glass. Visits begin with a guided walk along the terraces and end with a tasting, served with bread and olive oil.

Yes, if you book ahead. Every visit is a guided walk through the terraced vineyards, followed by a tasting with bread and olive oil. There are three formats. Basic pours three wines and Plus pours the three Etna Bianco Superiore whites, each in about 90 minutes. The Maugeri Experience pours all five wines and lasts about two hours.
