Juicy peach and ripe pear lead in this 2022 anniversary blend. A delicate floral lift and a herbal edge sit behind them. Almond sits underneath, as it did in the earlier 10 Anni edition.

Palate

Dry and rounded rather than lean, at 13.5%, with the peach and pear carrying through. Old, low-yielding vines at Rosazzo and Buttrio give it more weight than an everyday Friuli white. The dry 2022 season brings ripeness without any sharp edges.

Finish

Medium length, ending on almond and a faint herbal bitterness that keeps the ripe fruit fresh. The roundness is what lingers.

Overall

Alessandro Gallici's dressed-up edition of a long-running Laithwaites white, made to mark 20 years since the first Visionario. The earlier 10 Anni edition was well liked, about where a rounded, peachy £17 white should sit. Drink it by 2027 with seafood or roast chicken.

What £17 buys in Gallici's anniversary Visionario

Laithwaites is the only UK shop we track for Visionario Anniversario, so there is one price on this page: £17 a bottle, or £15 when you mix 12 or more. Laithwaites pitches the standard Visionario as its value answer to Friuli's famous white blends, and this is the dressed-up edition.

Wine fit score

How the 20 Anni Visionario scores as a food white

Strong for food and for beginners: a rounded, fruity white at 13.5% is easy to like and easy to match. Low for the cellar, because its drinking window ends in 2027, and middling for value at £17.

Best with food 8.4/10

Rounded body, fresh acidity and peach fruit: it matches chicken, seafood and creamy dishes as well as an aperitif plate.

Best intro to this style 8.2/10

Dry but rounded and fruity at 13.5%, with no sharp edges: easy to like on a first bottle.

Best value 6.2/10

At £17 an IGP white with no named grapes is a step up from an everyday Friuli white. The case for the price is the old-vine sourcing and the anniversary edition, not the label.

Best for an occasion 6.2/10

A limited anniversary edition from named old vines gives it a story for a dinner, without a DOC or DOCG behind it.

Best everyday bottle 5.5/10

At £17 it is above weeknight money, though £15 by the mixed dozen brings it closer.

Best for cellar 2.0/10

A white to drink young; its drinking window for the 2022 ends in 2027.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Drought brought the 2022 harvest forward in the Friuli Colli Orientali, the Udine press reported: the whites were picked early, ripe and healthy, with a smaller crop expected at the time. A ripe, rounded year. Laithwaites suggests drinking this bottle by the end of 2027.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Venezia Giulia IGP, Rosazzo and Buttrio: where the 20 Anni comes from

Venezia Giulia IGP is the regional label that lets a Friuli producer blend grapes from across the region. Gallici sourced this cuvée from old, low-yielding vines in Rosazzo and Buttrio, hill villages near Udine in Friuli's white-wine heartland.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Venezia Giulia is in the IGT tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

  1. 01

Old, low-yielding vines at Rosazzo and Buttrio

    Cost up

The 20 Anni comes from the finest parcels of old, low-yielding vines in Rosazzo and Buttrio. Old vines give less fruit per plant, so each bottle costs more to grow than the standard Visionario.

  2. 02

    A limited anniversary edition

    Cost up

This is a one-off cuvée made to mark 20 years since the first Visionario, sold as a limited edition. A small run spreads the fixed costs of a separate bottling and label over fewer bottles.

  3. 03

One UK retailer tracked, priced by the mixed case

    Cost down

Laithwaites is the only UK retailer we track for Visionario Anniversario, so this page shows one price. It is £17 a bottle, or £15 when you mix 12 or more.

  4. 04

    IGP rather than DOC

    Cost down

Venezia Giulia IGP is the broad regional label, with looser rules than a Friuli DOC. The strict yield limits of a DOC do not add to the price of this bottle.

  5. 05

UK duty and VAT at 13.5 per cent

    Cost up

At 13.5% alcohol, UK duty is about £3.10 a bottle at the £30.62 per litre of pure alcohol rate in force since February 2026. VAT takes another £2.83 of the £17.

Food Pairing

Seafood, roast chicken and creamy starters for a rounded Friuli white

Seafood or roast chicken suit the 20 Anni, or serve it as an aperitif. Its peach and pear fruit, 13.5% and rounded texture carry richer dishes than a lean Pinot Grigio would.

Body matching Strong match

Roast chicken and creamy white meats

A rounded 13.5% white with peach and pear has the weight to sit beside roast chicken or a creamy veal dish without vanishing. Roast chicken is the match to reach for first with the 20 Anni.

Try with: Vitello Tonnato · Cotoletta alla Milanese · Coniglio alla ligure · Roast chicken · More pairings →

Fat cutting Strong match

Seafood with butter, cream or oil

Peachy fruit and fresh acidity cut through buttery prawns or a creamy seafood pasta, and the wine's roundness matches the richness of the dish. Seafood is the natural home for this bottle.

Try with: Fregula ai frutti di mare · Impepata di cozze · Baccala Mantecato · Salt and pepper prawns · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Almond, herbs and spring vegetables

The wine's almond and herbal notes echo dishes built on herbs, peas and greens. A risi e bisi or a herby vegetable pie tastes greener beside it, and the wine tastes fruitier.

Try with: Risi e bisi · Frittata di maccheroni · Torta pasqualina · Trofie al pesto · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Cured meats, hard cheese and aperitif plates

Salt makes the peach and pear taste riper and softens the wine's bitter almond edge. That is why a plate of cured ham or a hard cheese suits it as an aperitif. Cured meat and hard cheese worked with the earlier 10 Anni too.

Try with: Frico · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Lucanica · Cheese board · More pairings →

Acidity matching Good match

Simply cooked white fish

Fresh acidity and stone fruit suit grilled or baked white fish. The wine's body means it does not get lost next to a whole roasted sea bass or a fish stew.

Try with: Pesce spada alla Siciliana · Brodetto alla giuliese · Baccala alla cosentina · Steamed sea bass · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Skip hot curries and sweet puddings

Chilli heat strips the peach and pear from a dry white and leaves only the alcohol, and a sweet pudding makes it taste sour. Keep the 20 Anni for savoury food.

Skip with: Chicken jalfrezi · Red Curry · Kung pao chicken · Sticky Toffee Pudding · Tres Leches Cake · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

A limited-edition white blend made by Alessandro Gallici for Laithwaites to mark 20 years since the first Visionario. It comes from the finest parcels of old, low-yielding vines in Rosazzo and Buttrio in the hills of Friuli, and carries the Venezia Giulia IGP label.

This edition is sold only as a white blend, and the grapes are not named. The standard Visionario is a blend of Friulano, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Malvasia and Gewürztraminer whose proportions change each year.

Juicy peach and pear, then almond, a delicate floral note and a herbal edge, with a rounded texture. The 2022 is dry at 13.5% alcohol.

Friuli. The label reads Venezia Giulia IGP, the same tier this page shows as IGT: the wide regional label for Friuli Venezia Giulia. The fruit comes from Rosazzo and Buttrio, hill villages near Udine.

Seafood and roast chicken, or serve it as an aperitif. Its peachy fruit and rounded body also suit a seafood fregula, creamed salt cod and veal tonnato.

It costs £17 a bottle at Laithwaites, or £15 a bottle when you mix 12 or more. Drink the 2022 by the end of 2027.
