Tasting Notes

What Jermann's Where Dreams tastes like

Jermann grows this Chardonnay on marly sandstone in the Collio hills and ages it for eleven months in small French oak barrels. Ripe exotic fruit, melted butter, vanilla and pastry lead. Our note below follows the 2022 and 2023, the two vintages most UK shops stock.

Ripe peach and pineapple come first, then melted butter, vanilla and a pastry note from eleven months in small French oak barrels. The aromas are exotic but refined: nothing shouts. In the 2023 there is also caramel and honey, with a touch of dried lemon.

The wine is full and creamy, yet a fresh line of acidity runs right through it. Jermann grows the grapes on marly sandstone in the Collio hills, and that poor, stony soil keeps the richness in check. Baked apple and honey fill the middle, with a gentle sweet spice from the barrel. The 2022, from a hot, dry summer, is the rounder of the two recent vintages.

Finish

Long and clean, with a salty, stony edge once the butter fades. The oak leaves a faint toasty bite at the very end.

Overall

This is Jermann's flagship Chardonnay, first made in 1987, and it sits at the top of the range with Vintage Tunina. James Suckling scored the 2023 97 points and called it the best from here in a long time. Drink it now with food, or keep it: Jermann suggests 8 to 10 years and seals it with a screw cap, so it ages cleanly. Drinkers pick out the oak and butter above all, and it stays fresh underneath.

Wine fit score

How Where Dreams scores for food, value and cellar

A premium Chardonnay at £51 to £65 in a Venezia Giulia IGT pool whose typical bottle costs about £27, so value scores low while food and occasion score high. Jermann's 8 to 10 year window gives it real cellar credit for a white.

Best with food 8.4/10

Full-bodied oaked Chardonnay with firm acidity on Jermann's own sheet. Rich enough for roasts and risotto, fresh enough for shellfish. Rule band for aromatic whites: 60 to 85.

Best for an occasion 8.2/10

Jermann's flagship white alongside Vintage Tunina. James Suckling gave the 2023 97 points and 38th place in his Top 100 Wines of Italy 2025. A £51 to £65 price signals a special bottle.

Best for cellar 6.6/10

No mandated ageing as an IGT. An 8 to 10 year life, Wine Spectator sees the 2022 through 2035, and a screw cap guards it. Well above the 20 to 40 IGT band.

Best intro to this style 6.0/10

Chardonnay is a familiar grape and the style is soft and buttery. The £51 to £65 price and oak-led richness make it a step up rather than a first bottle.

Best value 3.8/10

Lowest in-stock price £51.34 against a Venezia Giulia IGT median of £26.90 from our own 151 listings. That ratio of 1.91 sits in the 30 to 55 band. Critic scores of 92 to 97 lift it within it.

Best everyday bottle 3.0/10

Inverse of the cellar credit plus a price penalty. Every in-stock bottle costs over £50, so this is a weekend or dinner-party white, not a Tuesday one.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Where Dreams vintages on sale: 2012 to 2023

The 2023 is the one to watch: James Suckling scored it 97 and placed it 38th in his Top 100 Wines of Italy for 2025. The 2022 came from a hot, dry Collio summer and drinks rounder. The 2012 and 2013 are mature bottles, past their 8 to 10 year window.

A wet spring and a fine, cool-nighted September made 2013 a white-wine year in Friuli, with good acidity and aroma. James Suckling gave this 2013 95 points. It is now past its 8 to 10 year window, a mature bottle to open soon.

A hot, erratic year across Italy: the winemakers' body Assoenologi counted seven heatwaves and rain at the wrong moments, and called the quality uneven. At fourteen years old this is a mature bottle, past its 8 to 10 year window, for drinkers who like aged, nutty Chardonnay.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Jermann, Antinori and the Collio: the story behind Dreams

Silvio Jermann made the first Dreams from the 1987 harvest and named it after a U2 song. Antinori bought a majority stake in Jermann in 2021, with Silvio keeping a minority share. The wine is labelled Venezia Giulia IGT, the region-wide tier, rather than Collio DOC.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Venezia Giulia is in the IGT tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Eleven months in small 300-litre French oak barrels

    Cost up

Jermann ages Dreams for eleven months in small 300-litre French oak barrels. Small barrels mean more wood per bottle and a year of cellar space before a bottle is sold, and the price has to carry both.

  2. 02

Jermann's flagship white, with scores of 92 to 97

    Cost up

Dreams is one of Jermann's two flagship whites with Vintage Tunina. Critics score it 92 to 97, with James Suckling's 97 for the 2023 the headline, and that kind of attention keeps demand and prices up worldwide.

  3. 03

Hillside Collio vineyards on poor, stony sandstone

    Cost up

The grapes come from the hills around Dolegna del Collio and Villanova di Farra, on poor, stony sandstone soil. Slopes and thin soil mean smaller crops and more handwork than flatland Chardonnay.

  4. 04

About 50,000 bottles a year, not a tiny parcel

    Cost down

Wine Spectator records 4,166 cases of the 2022, roughly 50,000 bottles. Jermann farms about 240 football pitches of vines, and that scale spreads the cost of barrels and cellar across many bottles.

  5. 05

UK duty and VAT inside the price

    Cost up

Of the £55 xtrawine asks for the 2023, about £2.99 is duty on a 13% wine (0.75 litres x 13% x £30.62) and about £9.17 is VAT, so roughly £12 of every £55 bottle is tax.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Dishes for a rich, buttery Friuli Chardonnay

Eleven months in French oak give Where Dreams a creamy weight, and a fresh acid line keeps it from feeling heavy. That pairing of richness and freshness suits roast birds, creamy risottos and sweet shellfish. It also works with Frico, the Montasio cheese fritter from its home region.

Fat cutting Strong match

Roast chicken and other roast birds

The fresh acidity cuts through roasted skin and gravy. The creamy oak texture matches the richness of the meat. A buttery Friuli Chardonnay like Where Dreams has the weight for a whole bird; a lighter white does not.

Try with: Roast chicken · Roast turkey · Roast Pheasant · More pairings →

Body matching Strong match

Creamy mushroom and truffle risottos

Risotto is rich and starchy, and the wine's full body meets it head on. Honey and baked apple from eleven months in oak echo the earthy sweetness of porcini and truffle. Neither side gets swamped.

Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Truffle risotto · Risotto alla Milanese · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Crab, whipped cod and other sweet fish

Sweet shellfish and creamy fish dishes share the wine's butter and vanilla notes. The salty edge on the finish picks up the sea in the food. The acidity keeps the plate from feeling heavy.

Try with: Crab · Baccala Mantecato · Steamed sea bass

Salt balance Good match

Montasio cheese and Frico from Friuli

Frico is the Montasio cheese fritter from the wine's own region, and the match is local for a reason. Salt in the cheese makes the fruit taste riper. The wine's weight stands up to melted cheese where a thin white would vanish.

Try with: Frico · Fonduta · Cheese board · More pairings →

Acidity matching Good match

Veal and white meats in creamy sauces

The acidity lifts a mayonnaise or butter sauce the way lemon does. The wine's body matches veal and pork. Vitello Tonnato, with its tuna and capers, finds the same salty note in the glass.

Try with: Vitello Tonnato · Cotoletta alla Milanese · Agnolotti del Plin · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Raw fish, oysters and hot spice

Oak and butter flatten the delicate taste of oysters and raw fish. The briny side of the food turns the oak bitter. Chilli heat does the opposite: it makes the alcohol and the wood feel louder. Save this wine for cooked, creamy or roasted plates.

Skip with: Oysters · Sashimi · Chicken madras · Crispy chilli beef · Pairing guide →

This wine has a life of 8 to 10 years from the harvest, and every bottle since the 2011 vintage has a screw cap, a choice made to protect the wine. Wine Spectator sees the 2022 drinking well through 2035. The 2012 and 2013 on sale now are mature and suit drinkers who like aged Chardonnay.

Common Questions

It is Jermann's flagship Chardonnay from the hills of Friuli, in north-east Italy. The grapes grow on marly sandstone around Dolegna del Collio, and the wine spends eleven months in small 300-litre French oak barrels. It is labelled Venezia Giulia IGT and sits at the top of the Jermann range beside Vintage Tunina.

Silvio Jermann named it after U2's 1987 album The Joshua Tree and its song Where the Streets Have No Name. The first wine came from the 1987 harvest. The label changed to Were Dreams, now it is just wine! in 1996, then to W... Dreams... in 2003, and went back to Where Dreams have no end in 2015.

Ripe peach and pineapple, melted butter, vanilla and a pastry note from the oak, with a fresh line of acidity underneath. The aromas are exotic but refined. The finish is long, with a stony, saline edge. The 2022 is the rounder vintage; the 2023 adds caramel, honey and dried lemon.

Jermann gives it a life of 8 to 10 years from the harvest. Every bottle since the 2011 vintage has a screw cap, which Jermann chose to protect the wine as it ages. The 2022 and 2023 drink well now and should hold into the early 2030s. The 2012 and 2013 on sale are mature bottles, past the producer's suggested window.

We track five UK shops with this wine in stock, from about £51 to £65 for a standard bottle of the 2022 or 2023. xtrawine also lists a 2022 magnum and the 2012 and 2013 back vintages. Prices on this page are checked against each shop's site, so compare the vintages before you choose.

Marchesi Antinori, the Tuscan family behind Tignanello, bought a majority stake in Jermann in 2021. Silvio Jermann kept a minority share and still guides the style of the wines. Antinori, known mostly for Tuscan reds, said the Jermann winery runs on its own. It called the deal new territory: its first move into Friuli, one of Italy's best white-wine regions.
