Tasting Notes

What Collazzi's Libertà 2023 tastes like

Libertà blends Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from Collazzi's own vineyards in Impruneta, on clay and limestone soil. The grapes are picked by hand, each variety and plot apart, and fermented in temperature-controlled vats. The wine then spends a year in barrels and tanks.

Ripe plum, blackcurrant and cherry, with dark chocolate and coffee underneath in the 2023. Across vintages, cedar, vanilla and leather come through too, and the estate finds a balsamic note from Merlot, its main grape.

Full-bodied, with soft, sweet tannins, and Merlot leads the blend. Collazzi's vineyards in Impruneta are usually warmer and drier than the land around them. Plenty of sun and mild days give the grapes a long, full ripening.

Finish

Long and complex, but never forceful. Falstaff, which scored the 2023 93 points, found it "slightly spicy on the finish".

Overall

Libertà is Collazzi's second wine, first made in 2008 from the estate's younger vineyards, for anyone who likes a soft, ripe Tuscan red. Drinkers pick out dark fruit and oak most, and we would open the 2023 now or keep it until 2030.

Wine fit score

Where Collazzi Libertà scores best

Best with food and Best value lead its scores. Libertà has the soft, sweet tannins of a Merlot-led blend, and the 2023 costs about £23.

Best with food 8.2/10

Soft, sweet tannins and ripe plum fruit suit red meat: a Fiorentina steak, roast lamb or a slow-cooked ragù. Aged pecorino and cured sausage work too. Keep it away from chilli heat.

Best value 7.6/10

About £23 for the 2023, which Falstaff scored 93 points. That buys hand-picked grapes from the estate's own vineyards and a year in barrels and tanks.

Best intro to this style 6.8/10

Merlot leads the blend, and the tannins are soft and sweet, with ripe plum and cherry fruit. It is an easy Tuscan red to like, though its full body suits people who already enjoy richer reds.

Best for an occasion 6.6/10

The second wine of an estate the Marchi family has owned since 1933, with 93 points from Falstaff for the 2023. A good bottle for a roast with friends, or a gift for someone who likes Tuscan reds.

Best for cellar 4.8/10

No rule sets its ageing, but the estate gives it a year in barrels and tanks, then six months in bottle. We would drink the 2023 from now until 2030.

Best everyday bottle 4.4/10

At about £23 it costs more than a weeknight red. Its soft tannins make it easy to drink, but it suits a Sunday roast better than a Tuesday supper.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The 2023 vintage behind Collazzi Libertà

Falstaff scored the 2023 Libertà 93 points in October 2025. In the Chianti Classico hills a few kilometres away, May and early June 2023 were wet, and mildew cut the crop in some vineyards. July and August were hot, but the spring rain had left the vines enough water.

In the Chianti Classico hills a few kilometres from the estate, a wet May and early June 2023 brought mildew to some vineyards and cut the crop. A good gap between day and night temperatures in late August and early September then helped the grapes ripen well.

Collazzi: the Marchi family's estate near Florence

The Marchi family has owned Collazzi, in the hills a few kilometres from Florence, since 1933. Libertà has been the estate's second wine since the 2008 harvest. Falstaff gave the 2023 93 points, after 92 for each of the 2019, 2020 and 2022.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Toscana is in the IGT tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

The estate ages Libertà for 12 months in barrels and tanks, then six more in bottle. Barrels and that cellar time cost more than a red sold young straight from the tank.

    Cost down

Food Pairing

Fiorentina steak, roast lamb and ragù with Collazzi Libertà

Red meat suits Libertà best. Merlot leads the blend, and the wine has soft, sweet tannins and ripe plum fruit. It is full-bodied enough for a Fiorentina steak, roast lamb or a slow-cooked ragù. Keep chilli heat away, as it makes the tannin and alcohol feel harsh.

Body matching Strong match

Fiorentina steak and grilled meat

A thick grilled steak needs a red with weight, and Collazzi's Merlot-led Toscana IGT is full-bodied. Its soft, sweet tannins meet the charred crust without drying your mouth, and the ripe plum fruit stands up to the beef.

Try with: Fiorentina steak · Arrosticini · Porchetta · More pairings →

Tannin softening Strong match

Roast and grilled lamb

Lamb fat coats the mouth, and the tannins in this Merlot-led Tuscan red help clear it away. The meat in turn makes the tannins feel softer still, so Libertà tastes rounder and fruitier.

Try with: Leg of lamb · Rack of lamb · Lamb chops · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Slow-cooked beef ragù and braises

Long cooking gives a ragù deep, browned flavours, and the dark chocolate and coffee notes in the 2023 Libertà meet them. Its gentle spice at the end lifts the sauce instead of fighting it.

Try with: Ragu alla bolognese · Lasagna · Brasato al Barolo · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Aged pecorino and cured sausage

Salt in aged cheese and cured pork softens a red's tannins and brings its fruit forward. This Merlot-led Toscana IGT has the ripe plum and cherry to take that boost without turning hard.

Try with: Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Caciocavallo farcito · Lucanica · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

A Sunday roast of beef or duck

Roast beef and duck are rich but not fiery, and the tannins in Libertà, a full Tuscan red, cut through their fat. Its ripe fruit sits easily with the gravy and leaves your mouth fresh for the next bite.

Try with: Sunday Roast Beef · Beef wellington · Roast Duck · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Chilli-hot curries and stir-fries

Chilli heat makes the tannin and alcohol in this full Tuscan red feel harsh, and the ripe fruit tastes flat. Keep Libertà for food that is rich rather than fiery.

Skip with: Chicken jalfrezi · Szechuan beef · Green curry · Pizza Diavola · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

Libertà is a red Toscana IGT from Collazzi, an estate in Impruneta a few kilometres from Florence. It is the estate's second wine, first made in 2008. The estate gives the blend as 55% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc.

It smells of ripe plum, blackcurrant and cherry, with dark chocolate and coffee in the 2023. In the mouth it is full-bodied and long, with soft, sweet tannins. Falstaff scored the 2023 93 points.

Libertà is Italian for freedom. In 1376 the word was added to the coat of arms of the family that then owned Collazzi. The family had fought bravely for Florence's freedom from an invader.

We would drink it from now until 2030. The estate ages it for a year in barrels and tanks, then six months in bottle, and its tannins are already soft.

Red meat suits it best: a Fiorentina steak, roast lamb or a slow-cooked beef ragù. Aged pecorino and cured sausage work too. Keep it away from chilli heat, which makes the tannin and alcohol feel harsh.

One shop on this page sells it: the 2023, at about £23 a bottle. With a single seller, there is no price to compare here.
