Stefano Amerighi

Stefano Amerighi grows Syrah, and almost only Syrah, on two hills at Poggiobello di Farneta near Cortona, in south-east Tuscany. He set out in 2001 to make a grand Syrah, choosing his vine cuttings in France's Rhone Valley. The estate farms to Demeter's certified standard, and part of the harvest is trodden by foot. The vines, about eleven football pitches, sit inside a bigger living farm of fruit trees, grains, olives and cattle. Nothing is added in the cellar. He also serves as president of the Cortona DOC producers' consortium.

About Stefano Amerighi

Stefano Amerighi set out in 2001 to make a grand Syrah, not Sangiovese, building on the Amerighi family's farming tradition near Cortona. He searched for the right site and found it at Poggiobello di Farneta: two hills facing south and south-east. An old gravel road, a small wood and a ridge close them in. The vine cuttings he chose himself, in France's Rhone Valley, the home of benchmark Syrah.

The farming is biodynamic and certified by Demeter. Vineyard work follows lunar and planetary rhythms, and the only treatments are small doses of copper and sulphur, backed by herbal infusions. Amerighi reads Rudolf Steiner but also Masanobu Fukuoka, the Japanese pioneer of do-nothing farming. Six people work the estate all year round.

The eight hectares of vines, about eleven football pitches, sit inside a bigger living farm. Around them grow some two hundred old fruit varieties, grains and olives, alongside Chianina cattle, pigs, geese and hens. Amerighi calls the place a laboratory for farming's sustainability rather than just a wine estate.

In the cellar nothing is forced. After de-stemming, part of the grapes go in as whole berries and part are trodden by foot; the must moves into small concrete vats without pumps. Fermentation runs on the vineyard's own yeasts, with no added sulphur and no temperature control. The wine rests 14 months in wood and cement and is bottled without filtering or stabilising. The Cortona Syrah leads the range. In exceptional years Apice, from the peak of the de' Canonici vineyard, adds two and a half years in bottle before release; the estate calls it its family silver. A Syrah rosato and a Pecorino project in the Sibillini mountains round things out.

There is no published tasting offer or visiting hours. To visit, write or call the estate directly; its wines reach Britain through a small number of merchants.

Common questions

  • It is grown from cuttings Amerighi selected himself in the Rhone Valley, farmed to Demeter-certified biodynamic standards, and made with nothing added. After de-stemming, part of the grapes go in as whole berries, part are trodden by foot, and the wine ferments on its own yeasts in small concrete vats.
