Cantina Sociale di Trento

Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy

Cantina Sociale di Trento is the wine co-operative of the city of Trento, founded in 1956 by eleven growers. Around 480 member growers now farm some 750 hectares in the hills around the city. The house speciality is Trentodoc sparkling wine, led by the Chardonnay-based 601 range.

About Cantina Sociale di Trento

Eleven growers signed the founding deed of Trento's co-operative cellar on 17 October 1956. The idea was simple: together, small family vineyards could reach markets that none could reach alone. Today about 480 member growers farm the hills around the city, an area of roughly a thousand football pitches. Height matters here. The grapes ripen slowly, and the swing between warm days and cold nights keeps their aromas sharp.

Sparkling wine is the house speciality, refermented in its bottle the traditional way and sold under Trento's own badge, Trentodoc. The 601 range is the visiting card: Chardonnay picked between 350 and 600 metres, sold as a Brut, a Rosé and a Dosaggio Zero that rests 20 to 24 months on its lees. A separate line, Zell, comes from a single hillside above the city and stretches that rest to three years.

In August 2018 the co-op absorbed Concilio, a winery founded in 1860 by the Grigolli family at Mori. Concilio had sold the co-op's wines for years, so the merger completed the chain from vine to market. It also explains why some shops still list these bottles under the Concilio name. The old Concilio site at Volano now handles bottling and logistics, and its brands live on inside the range.

The range runs wide. Alongside the sparklers sit the Heredia line of single-grape Trentino DOC wines, reds like the Mori Vecio Riserva, and local grapes such as Lagrein, Marzemino, Teroldego and Müller Thurgau. All told, about six million bottles leave the cellars each year.

The cellar sits among vineyards on the southern edge of Trento, just over a kilometre from the Trento Sud motorway exit. Its wine shop is open Monday to Saturday, no booking needed, and the building itself is recent, built to sustainability criteria. Guided visits run by reservation only at the group's Volano site, the old Concilio winery, which also keeps a shop. Staff there speak English, German and French.
