Torre Mora

Torre Mora is the Piccini family's Etna estate at Rovittello, on the volcano's northern slope above Castiglione di Sicilia. About 32 acres of organically farmed vines sit in two named districts: Dafara Galluzzo at Rovittello and Alboretto Chiuse del Signore at Linguaglossa. The vines are Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante. They feed an Etna DOC range led by Cauru and Scalunera. Visits centre on the estate's lava-stone palmento, with a four-wine tasting bookable from €25.

About Torre Mora

Piccini 1882 is one of Tuscany's best known family wine houses. The fourth generation runs it today. Mario Piccini first walked the Torre Mora farm at Rovittello in 2016. By his importer's telling, he fell for it on the spot. The family rented the property, restored it, then bought it outright, completing the purchase of the vineyards that same year. Torre Mora remains the house's only Sicilian estate.

The vines grow between roughly 600 and 750 metres on Etna's cooler northern flank. They split across two contrade: Dafara Galluzzo at Rovittello, part of Castiglione di Sicilia, and Alboretto Chiuse del Signore across the boundary in Linguaglossa. The vines stand on terraces held by dry lava-stone walls. They root in the loose black ash the volcano keeps renewing. Days are warm and nights are cold. That swing builds the aromatic tension Etna's north slope is prized for. Farming has been organic since the Piccini arrival, with certification from 2018.

The cellar works to a rule the estate states plainly: one grape variety, one territory. Nerello Mascalese leads the reds, with Nerello Cappuccio in support. Carricante carries the whites. The range starts with the Cauru pair of Etna Rosso and Etna Bianco. Cauru is Sicilian for hot. Then come the Scalunera bianco, rosato and rosso, and the Chiuse Vidalba bottlings. A traditional method sparkling from Nerello Mascalese completes the range. It spends 44 months on the lees before the sediment is removed, and takes no added sugar.

Visits are easy to arrange. The tour walks the terraced vineyards and the historic palmento. Every old Etna farm once ran one of these lava-stone press houses. The visit ends with a tasting of four wines. It lasts about an hour and a half, takes groups of up to six, and starts from €25. A light lunch is an option.

What Torre Mora makes

Torre Mora's current bottle selection is led by Etna DOC. The clearest grape signal comes from Nerello Cappuccio and Nerello Mascalese.
