Barone Pizzini is one of the oldest estates in Franciacorta, the sparkling-wine district south of Lake Iseo in Lombardy. It was the first to make a certified organic Franciacorta. Founded in 1870, it farms 54 hectares at Provaglio d'Iseo and makes about 300,000 bottles a year. Its first organic Franciacorta came from the 2002 harvest. The estate also brought back Erbamat, a local white grape that had been all but abandoned. Tours and tastings are booked online, and the whole company is certified vegan.
Book a visitBrothers Enrico and Bernardino Pizzini set up the Pizzini farming company in 1870. Giulio Pizzini Piomarta von Thurberg led it after them. For more than a century it stayed a family farm. In 1993 a group of investors bought the estate. Silvano Brescianini, a founding partner of that company, runs it today as general manager. From 2002 the same owners took on two more estates, Poderi di Ghiaccioforte at Scansano in the Maremma and Pievalta in the Castelli di Jesi in the Marche.
Brescianini's bet was organic farming. No Franciacorta house had certified it before. Trials began in 1997 and the certification process started in 2001. The first organic Franciacorta came from the 2002 harvest. The estate now farms 54 hectares, about 75 football pitches, split into 29 separate parcels. It sells around 300,000 bottles a year. In 2012 the International Wine Challenge named its Franciacorta Rosé the best organic wine in the world. In 2015 it added Biodiversity Friend certification and won Gambero Rosso's special prize for sustainable growing.
The winery itself made a statement in 2007. Architect Claudio Gasparotti designed a building of about 5,600 square metres, two thirds of it underground. The earth keeps it cool and solar panels supply part of its power. Inside, the wines are made by the bottle-fermented metodo classico that defines Franciacorta DOCG. The range runs from Animante, the wine the estate says represents it best, through Satèn and Rosé to Bagnadore, the Riserva. It also makes still wines, Curtefranca DOC reds and whites.
Two things set the estate apart from its neighbours. It brought back Erbamat, a local white grape that a 1997 provincial survey listed among 18 abandoned native varieties. The first vineyard went in during 2008, the first harvest came in 2011, and the first sparkling wine made from it in 2013. In 2021 the estate released its first Franciacorta with Erbamat in the blend, and chose Animante to carry it. And the whole company is certified vegan by the Vegan Society, a step Gambero Rosso reported in January 2025. No animal products are used in making the wines.
Visits are booked online. Story in Evolution costs 28 euros for a vineyard and cellar tour with three wines. Viti&Cultura Bio costs 40 euros with three wines. Timeless costs 50 euros with four, including two vintages of the Bagnadore Riserva. The shop is open Monday to Saturday and on Sunday mornings. The building is wheelchair accessible, and children come in free.
