Cà Maiol

Cà Maiol sits on the flat land just south of Lake Garda, outside Desenzano. The estate began in 1967, around a farmhouse dated 1710. Its founder was one of the growers who set up the body that protects Lugana. Turbiana, the white grape behind Lugana, fills most of its vineyards, and the rest lie west of the lake in Valtènesi. The Marzotto family's wine group bought the estate in 2017. The showroom opens every day, and four guided tastings can be booked.

About Cà Maiol

A farmhouse dated 1710 stands at the middle of the estate. In 1967 that house and the land around it became a winery. The spot was picked for its mild lake air, and for a long local habit of making good wine. The founder joined other growers to build the consorzio that still protects the Lugana name. The old house now holds the sales office, with a wide showroom beside it.

The vines cover about 165 football pitches, split between two places. Most sit on the flats south of the lake, on heavy clay left behind by old glaciers. Turbiana grows there, also called Trebbiano di Lugana. It gives the wine lemon, almond and a salty snap. The rest of the land lies west of Garda, in the Valtènesi hills. Groppello leads there, with Marzemino, Barbera and Sangiovese behind it.

Grapes are picked by hand so the bunches arrive whole. The newest cellar is built on three floors, and the fruit drops from one stage to the next instead of being pumped. Gentler handling matters for Turbiana, which bruises easily. Every plot ferments on its own, so the team can taste what each patch of land gives before blending. Solar panels cover the cellar roof, and the vineyards get no chemical fertiliser. An outside body, Equalitas, checks those claims. The estate has also planted a trial plot from cuttings of its oldest Turbiana vines, hunting for plants that cope with hotter summers.

Five Cà Maiol wines are on sale through this site. Prestige is the everyday Lugana. Molin is the Superiore and Sùere the Riserva, both aged longer than the standard bottling before release. Cantariva is the sparkling one, made by the Metodo Classico. Roseri is the pale pink Chiaretto from the Valtènesi side. Locals call that style the wine of one night, because the juice sits on the skins for only a few hours.

Visitors are welcome. A guided walk through the vineyard and the cellar ends with a tasting, and there are four to pick from. The shortest runs an hour and a half and pours three wines. The longest runs two hours, pours six, and adds local food alongside. All of them have to be booked ahead. The wine shop next to the showroom opens seven days a week and needs no appointment. Sirmione is the nearest exit on the Milan to Venice motorway.
