Tasting Notes

What Poggio Lamentano's Bolgheri red tastes like

A 40/30/30 blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Sangiovese from one of the highest hillsides in Bolgheri, raised in clay amphora rather than oak. Jancis Robinson gave the 2021 18 out of 20 and called it a gem. Jamie Goode gave the debut 2020 94 out of 100.

Nose

Ripe blackberry and cherry, the fruit Jamie Goode found in the debut 2020, with plum behind them and a savoury, earthy Sangiovese edge and wild Tuscan herbs. No vanilla or toast: the wine spends its year in clay amphora, not oak, which Davy Żyw says keeps the fruit pure.

Palate

Medium to full, at about 14%. Three weeks on the skins in open vats give ripe, plump tannin, and the 30% Sangiovese keeps a bite of acidity inside the Cabernet and Merlot richness. Jancis Robinson said the 2021 combined Tuscan bite with Bolgheri opulence, and gave it 18 out of 20.

Finish

Long and stony, with the rocky edge of the high hillside site and the herbs lingering after the fruit.

Overall

One of Bolgheri's smallest wines: 1,333 bottles a year from a farm above Gaja's Ca' Marcanda, made by the Żyw family with Grattamacco's Luca Marrone. It drinks from release and keeps about ten years. A wine to buy on the story and keep for the taste.

Wine fit score

How Poggio Lamentano scores on the Italian Wine Fit Score

High for food and occasions: a 1,333-bottle wine with an 18 out of 20 from Jancis Robinson. Low for everyday drinking at £49.

Best with food 8.5/10

Sangiovese acidity inside a ripe Cabernet-Merlot frame, with no sweet oak, makes it a natural steak, roast and ragu wine.

Best for an occasion 8.5/10

A 1,333-bottle Bolgheri red with an 18 out of 20 from Jancis Robinson, a label painted by the family's artist uncle and a family story behind it: a gift that means something.

Best value 7.0/10

£49 for a 1,333-bottle wine that Jancis Robinson scored 18 out of 20 is fair for the scarcity; she thought £35 for the 2021 was not remotely too much.

Best for cellar 7.0/10

The producer gives it about ten years. A year in amphora and a year in bottle before release mean it drinks well from the start and holds to the early 2030s.

Best intro to this style 5.5/10

At about 14% with firm Tuscan tannin and no vanilla sweetness, it suits a drinker who already likes savoury reds.

Best everyday bottle 2.5/10

At £49 with only 1,333 bottles a year, this is a special-dinner wine rather than a weeknight one.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

What sits behind a £49 Bolgheri red from Poggio Lamentano

1,333 bottles a year, a year in clay amphora and another in bottle, organic hillside vines and no filtering: nothing here scales. The label says Vino da Tavola, not Bolgheri DOC, by the producer's own choice.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

This bottle sits outside that pyramid, sold as Vino da Tavola. That is not a quality verdict: it means the producer kept the widest possible freedom at vinification and ageing, which is also how the first Super Tuscans were sold.

  1. 01

    Only 1,333 bottles a vintage

    Cost up

Poggio Lamentano makes 1,333 bottles a year from a few hillside plots, so there is no scale to spread costs over. The first vintage sold out on a ballot, which is why £49 holds.

  2. 02

A year in clay amphora, then a year in bottle

    Cost up

The wine spends 12 months in clay amphora instead of oak, then another 12 months in bottle before sale. Two years of holding stock on a tiny run adds real cost per bottle.

  3. 03

Hand work: organic hillside vines, open-top vats, no fining or filtering

    Cost up

The vineyards are farmed organically on one of the highest sites in Bolgheri. The wine is made in open-top vats with three weeks on the skins, then bottled without fining or filtering. All of it is labour, none of it scales.

  4. 04

Labelled Vino da Tavola: no DOC fees or panels

    Cost down

Davy Żyw says the basic table-wine label is practical for a production this small and a nod to the first Super Tuscans. It means no DOC tasting panel or paperwork, one of the few things keeping the price under £50.

  5. 05

    UK VAT and alcohol duty

    Cost up

On £49, VAT is £8.17 and duty on a 14% wine adds roughly £3.10, so about £11.25 of the price goes to HMRC before Berry Bros takes its margin.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Sangiovese bite, Bolgheri richness: dishes that fit Poggio Lamentano

Jancis Robinson describes Tuscan bite with Bolgheri opulence: Sangiovese acidity inside a ripe Cabernet-Merlot frame, with no sweet oak. That is a steak, roast and ragu wine.

Tannin softening Strong match

Grilled steak and Tuscan roasts

Ripe Cabernet and Merlot tannin, plump rather than hard after a year in clay, grips the protein in a steak and turns silkier. The Sangiovese acidity keeps a big piece of meat from feeling heavy. A bistecca is the local answer.

Try with: Fiorentina steak · Sunday Roast Beef · Ribeye steak · Porchetta · More pairings →

Acidity matching Strong match

Tomato-rich pasta and slow ragu

The 30% Sangiovese gives the acidity that matches a tomato sauce, so neither tastes sharp. With no sweet oak in the way, the savoury, earthy side of the wine sits comfortably beside a long-cooked ragu.

Try with: Ragu alla bolognese · Pasta arrabbiata · Lasagna · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Herb-roasted lamb

The wild Tuscan herb note that runs through the finish picks up rosemary and thyme on a roast, and the ripe blackberry fruit suits lamb's sweetness. The tannin handles the fat.

Try with: Roast Lamb with Mint Sauce · Lamb chops · Rack of lamb · Agnello Cacio e Ova · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Aged pecorino and cured meat

Salt in an aged sheep's cheese or a salami makes the blackberry and plum taste riper and softens the tannin. Tuscan pecorino is the natural partner for the Sangiovese in the blend.

Try with: Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Lucanica · Strong cheddar cheese · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Mushroom and truffle dishes

Because the wine never sees oak, its earthy, stony side is not covered by vanilla, and it meets porcini and truffle on their own terms. The acidity cuts the butter in a risotto.

Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Truffle risotto · Tagliatelle al tartufo di Acqualagna · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Hot spice, delicate fish and sweet dishes

Chilli heat makes 14% Cabernet tannin taste harsh, and raw or delicate fish turns metallic against it. Sweet or sweet-and-sour sauces flatten the savoury fruit; those dishes want an off-dry white or a Prosecco.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Sashimi · Sticky Toffee Pudding · Sweet and sour pork · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Ten years of life, and a label worth keeping

The producer gives it about ten years. It is unfined and unfiltered, so expect a little sediment with age. The label is a painting by the family's artist uncle, Michael Żyw.

Drinking window
2025 → 2033

Decanting
h1

A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.

Cellar potential

The producer gives it about ten years. A year in amphora and a year in bottle before release mean it drinks well from the start and holds to the early 2030s.

Common Questions

The Żyw family, whose grandparents bought the Poggio Lamentano farm in Bolgheri in the 1960s. Davy Żyw, a senior buyer at Berry Bros & Rudd, makes the wine with Luca Marrone of Grattamacco, the estate next door, and Giorgio Meletti Cavallari. The first vintage was 2020.

About 40% Cabernet (Cabernet Sauvignon fermented together with Cabernet Franc), 30% Merlot and 30% Sangiovese, from some of the highest vineyards in Bolgheri. It ferments in open vats for three weeks, ages a year in clay amphora with no oak, then rests a year in bottle.

No. The label says Vino da Tavola, the basic category. Davy Żyw says that is practical for 1,333 bottles a year and a nod to the first Super Tuscans, which were also table wines. The vines sit in Bolgheri, above Gaja's Ca' Marcanda and beside Grattamacco.

£49 for the 2023 at Berry Bros & Rudd, the one UK stockist we track. Jancis Robinson thought £35 for the 2021 was not remotely too much for a wine of this quality.

Ripe blackberry, cherry and plum with a savoury, earthy Sangiovese edge, wild herbs and a stony finish, and no vanilla, because it never sees oak. Jancis Robinson found Tuscan bite with Bolgheri opulence, ripe tannins and great delicacy.

Yes. Davy Żyw was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2018. All profit from the first vintage went to research into the condition, and a share of every vintage since still does. His uncle, the artist Michael Żyw, painted the label.
