Tenuta Torciano

Tenuta Torciano sits at Ulignano, a hamlet a short drive north-east of San Gimignano's towers. The Giachi family has made wine here since 1720, and Pierluigi Giachi runs it today with his wife Luciana and their children. Dozens of day tours from Florence, Rome and the port at Livorno stop here. Tastings, lunches, cooking classes and truffle hunts run every day of the year, by booking. The house wines start with Vernaccia di San Gimignano and reach across Tuscany to Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino.

About Tenuta Torciano

Bartolomeo Giachi left Florence in 1720 and settled at Ulignano, near San Gimignano. The farm took its name from the Torciano stream that runs through its land. The family names run from his son Emanuele down to Pierluigi Giachi, who runs the estate today. Pierluigi works with his wife Luciana and their children, Emanuele and Vittoria. The Giachi have owned and run the place for more than 300 years.

San Gimignano is white wine country. Its Vernaccia was the first wine in Italy to win DOC status, in 1966, and it became a DOCG in 1993. Torciano makes it, and a good deal more besides. The family fills more than 700,000 bottles a year. The range reaches well beyond the home hills: Chianti and Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Bolgheri, Morellino di Scansano and Vin Santo. The Giachi also run sister estates under the Torciano name: Altezza and San Quirico at San Gimignano, Poggio Moreto at Scansano, and others at San Galgano and Bolgheri.

The estate runs more than forty experiences for visitors. It is open every day of the year, from nine in the morning to ten at night, and everything is booked ahead. A tasting in the old lounge takes about an hour. Lunch or dinner can be booked with a walk through the four cellars and their caves. There are pasta and pizza classes, truffle hunts with the estate's dogs, jeep rides through the vines and olive oil tastings. Meals are served in the winery, its caves, the garden and between the vine rows. The family's restaurant and wine bar, Bottega Torciano, is a short drive away at Poggibonsi, and their Hotel Torciano sells overnight packages from 138 euro.

Dozens of day tours from Florence, Rome and the cruise port at Livorno stop here for lunch and a tasting. On the tour sites it is listed as a winery and wine-tasting school. The whole site runs on solar power, restaurant and hotel included. San Gimignano's towers are a short drive away.
