Castello di Fonterutoli
Fonterutoli is a village that makes wine. The medieval hamlet sits on the road between Castellina in Chianti and Siena. The Mazzei family has made wine here since 1435 and still owns the whole village. The estate covers 650 hectares, about 910 football pitches. Vines take 110 of them, split into 114 parcels at 220 to 570 metres. Each plot is fermented on its own in a gravity-flow winery designed by Agnese Mazzei. Guests taste, eat and sleep in the same hamlet. The tasting room, the Osteria and the village Wine Resort all sit within it.

About Castello di Fonterutoli
The paper trail begins before the family even arrived. On 16 December 1398, the notary Ser Lapo Mazzei wrote to Francesco Datini, the merchant of Prato. He ordered six barrels of wine from Chianti. That letter is seen as the first written record of Chianti as a wine zone. The estate's Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva still carries his handwriting on its label. The Mazzei have made wine at Fonterutoli since 1435. The hamlet, an old Florentine stronghold on the via Chiantigiana, has stayed in the same hands ever since.
The estate spreads over woods and vineyard south of Castellina in Chianti, looking towards Siena. Some 110 hectares of vines, about 150 football pitches, are divided into 114 parcels. They sit between 220 and 570 metres above sea level. The parcels stay separate all the way through the cellar. Seventy-four tapered steel vats ferment them one by one, to keep the character of every plot. Each vat holds 100 hectolitres, the same as around 13,300 bottles.
The winery below the village was designed by Agnese Mazzei, an architect from the family. It steps down three levels. Grapes drop by gravity from the receiving plaza to the vats, then on to the wood. The barrel cellar sits 15 metres down in the rock and holds more than 3,000 oak casks. It needs no climate system. Five natural springs run through its bare stone walls and hold the temperature and humidity on their own. The building belongs to Toscana Wine Architecture, a network of Tuscan cellars by contemporary architects.
Chianti Classico carries the range. It runs from the estate bottling through the Ser Lapo Riserva to the Castello di Fonterutoli Gran Selezione. Above them sit the Toscana IGT wines. Siepi is the family's best-known bottling. Concerto di Fonterutoli stands beside it, along with Philip, a Cabernet Sauvignon drawn from two estates. Philip is named after Philip Mazzei, an ancestor born near Florence in 1730. He made his name in Jefferson's Virginia.
Few Chianti estates are this open. Cellar tours run daily. The 75-minute Fonterutoli Wine Tour includes four wines and costs 45 euros. At the top sits The Icons, at 170 euros. It is a private tasting of two vintages each of Castello di Fonterutoli, Concerto and Siepi. The Osteria di Fonterutoli cooks for the estate. The Societa Orchestrale pours wine by the glass in the village bar. The Wine Resort scatters its rooms and suites through the hamlet's stone houses.
