Tasting Notes

What Vigneti Vumbaca's Cirò Classico Superiore tastes like

Gaglioppo from one small plot of old bush vines at Sant'Anastasia, farmed organically and raised in steel, not oak. Expect a mid-ruby colour rather than a deep one, and a grape that makes quite tannic wines: this is a red for the table, not for sipping.

Nose

Ruby red, with a scent that is intense and fragrant and stays in the glass, as the producer's own note has it. In the 2023 the notes are red fruits, iris, liquorice and iron, the ones Gambero Rosso picked out when it gave the wine Tre Bicchieri. Gaglioppo can also smell of roses.

Palate

Dry and fresh, with good structure and a marked personality. The grapes are Gaglioppo from a two-hectare plot of bush vines at Sant'Anastasia, about three football pitches, 110 metres up and facing south over clay and limestone. The tannin is ripe rather than hard, and 13.5% alcohol sits inside a lively, round fruit. No oak: about 13 months in steel tanks and two in bottle keep the fruit clean.

Finish

Liquorice and a fine grip of tannin carry the finish, and it stays fresh rather than warm for a southern red at 13.5%.

Overall

This is the estate's main red, below the numbered Riserva that spends 29 months in steel. The whole range is about 30,000 bottles a year from a small organic estate, farmed by Christian Vumbaca, who left a Rome law firm to make wine. Drink the 2023 from 2025 to 2029.

Wine fit score

Where Vumbaca's Cirò fits: food first

Food is this wine's strongest card. Ripe tannin and fresh acidity make it a wine for lamb, pork, aged cheese and tomato pasta rather than a sipping wine.

Best with food 8.5/10

Ripe tannin, fresh acidity and no oak make this Cirò a wine for the table: lamb, roast pork, aged cheese and tomato pasta all fit. Only chilli heat fights it.

Best value 7.0/10

At £20 to £22 you get a Tre Bicchieri Cirò from a small organic estate, bottled at origin. Fair for what is in the glass: this is the Classico Superiore tier with the guide's top award.

Best intro to this style 6.0/10

Mid-ruby and savoury rather than plush, with tannin that asks for food. A good first Cirò if you already like Chianti or a young Nebbiolo.

Best for an occasion 6.0/10

A Tre Bicchieri red from Calabria's best-known wine zone for about £20: a talking point at dinner rather than a trophy label.

Best for cellar 5.5/10

Raised in steel and sold about 15 months after harvest, it is made to drink young: 2025 to 2029 for the 2023. The estate's Riserva is the one to keep longer.

Best everyday bottle 5.5/10

At £20 to £22 it is a weekend bottle rather than a weeknight one, and its tannin wants a plate of food beside it.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The 2023 vintage of Vumbaca's Cirò Rosso Classico Superiore

Only the 2023 is on sale here. Cirò rules keep a Rosso in the cellar until at least 1 June of the year after harvest. Vumbaca holds this one longer: about 13 months in steel tanks, then two months in bottle.

Drink now through 2029

Downy mildew hit Calabria's vineyards hard before the 2023 harvest, and the losses fell hardest on organic growers, who fight it with copper and sulphur alone. Vumbaca's 2023 came through: Gambero Rosso gave it Tre Bicchieri in its 2026 guide. Drink it from 2025 to 2029.

Tre Bicchieri 2026: what Gambero Rosso found in Vumbaca's 2023

Gambero Rosso's Vini d'Italia 2026 gave this 2023 its Tre Bicchieri. The guide called it an elegant wine with marked notes of red fruits, iris, liquorice and iron. Fresh and well judged on the palate, it said, with ripe tannins and a lively, round fruit (our translation). The 2019 took the same award in the 2022 guide.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Cirò is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

  1. 01

One plot of old bush vines at Sant'Anastasia, farmed organically and picked by hand into crates

    Cost up

The producer's sheet, last updated in 2022, puts the vines at about 46 years old, 110 metres up and facing south. Organic farming with copper and sulphur alone, and hand picking in late September and early October, mean more hours per bottle than a machine-farmed Cirò.

  2. 02

Yields about half of what the Cirò rules allow

    Cost up

The rules allow 11.5 tonnes of grapes per hectare. The producer's sheet gives 5 to 6, about half, so fewer bottles come from the same land.

  3. 03

No oak: about 13 months in steel tanks, then two months in bottle

    Cost down

Steel tanks cost a fraction of barrels, and the wine leaves the estate about 15 months after harvest. No barrel bill and little cellar time sit inside the £20 to £22.

  4. 04

Tre Bicchieri for the 2023 in Gambero Rosso's 2026 guide

    Cost up

The estate makes about 30,000 bottles a year across its range. The guide's top award for this exact vintage pulls demand, and that, not cost, keeps the price at £20 to £22 rather than lower.

  5. 05

    UK duty and VAT

    Cost up

Of a £20 bottle, about £6.43 is tax: £3.10 duty at 13.5% alcohol (£30.62 per litre of pure alcohol since 1 February 2026) plus £3.33 VAT. Of a £22 bottle, about £6.77 is tax.

Food Pairing

Food for a Gaglioppo with ripe tannin: what to serve with Vumbaca's Cirò

The producer's own list runs from well-built pasta dishes and roasts to red meat, game and aged cheeses. Gaglioppo's tannin and fresh acidity do the work; keep chilli heat away.

Tannin softening Strong match

Lamb, grilled, roast or slow-cooked

Lamb's fat and juices wrap the tannin, so the grip of Gaglioppo turns soft and the red fruit comes forward. The producer's own list starts with roasts and red meat, and a Cirò Classico Superiore like this one is made for a lamb chop off the grill.

Try with: Arrosticini · Agnello Ragu Lucano · Spezzatino di pecora · Lamb chops · More pairings →

Fat cutting Strong match

Roast pork and southern sausage

The wine's fresh acidity cuts through pork fat and resets the mouth between bites. This Cirò is raised in steel, so there is no oak sweetness to fight the crackling or the fennel: just lively red fruit and a dry finish.

Try with: Porchetta · Lucanica · Pampanella · Roast pork · More pairings →

Acidity matching Good match

Tomato and aubergine pasta, baked pasta

Tomato sauce is sharp, and a wine with less acidity than the sauce tastes flat beside it. This Cirò has the freshness to stay bright against a well-built pasta dish, which is the producer's first suggestion for it. Gaglioppo's dry grip suits baked pasta with meat too.

Try with: Pasta alla Norma · Anelletti al forno · Lasagna · Spaghetti al pomodoro · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Aged cheeses

Salt in an aged cheese softens tannin, and the cheese's fat rounds off the wine's dry finish. The liquorice and red-fruit notes of this Cirò stand up to caciocavallo or an aged pecorino, and the producer names aged cheeses itself.

Try with: Caciocavallo farcito · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Frico · Cheese board · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

A British Sunday roast

A red with good structure and ripe tannin matches the weight of roast beef or lamb without burying the gravy. Gaglioppo from Cirò brings the acidity a rich roast needs, and its savoury, iron-like edge suits venison and game, which the producer lists too.

Try with: Sunday Roast Beef · Roast Lamb with Mint Sauce · Shepherd's Pie · Venison Stew · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Chilli heat

Chilli makes tannin taste harsher and alcohol burn hotter, and this Cirò has both: firm Gaglioppo tannin and 13.5% alcohol. Keep it away from hot curries and chilli-spiked dishes; a soft, low-tannin red suits those better.

Skip with: Lamb bhuna · Crispy chilli beef · Pizza Diavola · Green curry · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

How long Vumbaca's Cirò Classico Superiore keeps

Drink the 2023 between 2025 and 2029. Decanter scored this wine's 2022 at 91 points in March 2024. Still, it is a wine to enjoy young rather than lay down: it sees no oak, and the estate's Riserva is the one kept longer, 29 months in steel.

Drinking window
2025 → 2029

Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.

Serving temperature
16-18°C

Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.

Cellar potential
Medium

Raised in steel and sold about 15 months after harvest, it is made to drink young: 2025 to 2029 for the 2023. The estate's Riserva is the one to keep longer.

Common Questions

A dry organic red made from Gaglioppo at Cirò in Calabria, 13.5% alcohol, raised about 13 months in steel tanks with no oak. Christian Vumbaca's estate farms about six hectares of vines and makes this wine from a two-hectare plot of bush vines at Sant'Anastasia, the first land his family bought there in 1984.

Yes. Gambero Rosso's Vini d'Italia 2026 guide gave the 2023, the vintage on sale here, its Tre Bicchieri. The 2019 won the same award in the 2022 guide.

Classico means the grapes grew on the land of Cirò and Cirò Marina, the two towns at the historic heart of the zone. Superiore means the wine reached at least 13.5% alcohol at release. A Riserva adds at least two years of ageing before sale.

The two shops on this page ask £20 and £22 a bottle. The £22 is a sale price cut from that shop's usual price, and the same shop prices a mixed dozen lower per bottle. The offer table shows the figures the shops print today.

Lamb, roast pork, aged cheeses and well-built pasta dishes. The producer's own list is structured first courses, roasts, red meat, game and aged cheeses. Keep it away from chilli-hot dishes, which make the tannin taste harsh.

Drink it between 2025 and 2029; it does not need years in a cellar. It is raised in steel, not oak, so freshness and fruit are the point. The estate's Riserva, kept 29 months in steel before bottling, is the one made for longer keeping.
