Tasting Notes

How Attems Sauvignon tastes: nettle, gooseberry and pomelo

Attems makes this Sauvignon in steel only, with four months resting on its yeast and no oak, so the grape's green side stays sharp. The estate's own sheet names boxwood, lily of the valley and pomelo; Falstaff's tasters found nettle, gooseberry and tomato leaf on the 2024 and gave it 91 points.

Nettle, gooseberry and tomato leaf first, the green Sauvignon notes Falstaff's tasters found on the 2024, with the pomelo and lily of the valley that Attems names on its own sheet. Vino.com's note adds melon, peach and sage.

Light and crisp at 12.5%, with sharp acidity and the mineral streak Attems' own sheet describes; Wine-Searcher files the style as green and flinty. The vines sit on Eocene sandstone and pebbly river soil west of Gorizia. Made in steel with four months resting on its yeast and no softening second fermentation, so the citrus stays bright.

Finish

Fresh and fruity, with the bergamot and wisteria note Attems describes, and persistent enough for Falstaff to call it out on the 2024.

Overall

Attems' entry Sauvignon, below its single-vineyard Cicinis. Vivino drinkers rate it 3.8 from 3,241 ratings, with the 2025 opening at 4.0, and critics average 89 out of 100. Drink it young and cold with sea bass, pesto or a caprese salad.

The 2025 Attems Sauvignon: a year Friuli's growers welcomed

The 2025 on sale followed a season the north-east's growers greeted as a great one for quality and quantity. Rain came at the right time, few treatments were needed and the crop was back to a normal size after two short years. Collio growers expected Sauvignon to shine on the swing between warm days and cool nights. Vivino's first 57 ratings average 4.0.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Attems: a Gorizia estate with records back to 1106, owned by Frescobaldi

The Attems family's vineyard land in the Collio is documented from 1106. The estate, now part of the Frescobaldi group, farms 44 hectares of south-facing terraces west of Gorizia. They are sheltered from the northern winds and the bora, the cold wind Trieste is known for. Its Sauvignon grows at about 60 metres on Eocene sandstone and pebbly river soil.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Venezia Giulia is in the IGT tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

  1. 01

    A restrained yield on a 44-hectare estate

    Cost up

Attems crops this Sauvignon at 8,000 kilos a hectare from plots between the plain and the slopes west of Gorizia. A restrained yield like that costs more per bottle than a high-cropped Friuli Sauvignon.

  2. 02

Frescobaldi ownership and a 1106 pedigree

    Cost up

The Frescobaldi name and an estate history documented from 1106 carry a brand premium; Wine-Searcher still rates its quality-to-price as outstanding at a 14-euro average.

  3. 03

UK duty and VAT on a 12.5% wine

    Cost up

Of the £14.90 vino.com price, about £5.35 is tax: £2.87 duty on a 12.5% wine plus £2.48 VAT. The rest is shared by the estate, shipping and the shop.

  4. 04

Steel only, no oak, sold young

    Cost down

Fermented and rested in steel for four months, then sold the year after harvest. No barrels and no years of cellar space sit in the price, unlike the estate's oak-aged Cicinis.

  5. 05

The IGT label, not Collio DOC

    Cost down

Attems bottles this Sauvignon as Venezia Giulia IGT rather than the Collio DOC it once carried, which lets it blend plain and hillside plots and keep the price near £15.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Sea bass, pesto and salads: what to eat with Attems Sauvignon

Crisp acidity, a light body and green, citrus aromas point this Sauvignon at fish and vegetables. Wine-Searcher lists white fish as its match, and the Italian shop Oltrevino suggests delicate fish, raw vegetable salads and soft cheese; pesto and a caprese salad are the home matches.

Acidity matching Strong match

Grilled and steamed white fish

Crisp acidity and citrus lift a plate of sea bass or swordfish the way a squeeze of lemon does. Wine-Searcher lists white fish as this Sauvignon's match, and its light body never smothers the fish.

Try with: Steamed sea bass · Pesce spada alla Siciliana · Fish Tacos · Baccala Mantecato

Aromatic bridge Strong match

Pesto, herbs and green vegetables

The nettle, tomato-leaf and sage notes in the glass echo basil, rocket and green herbs on the plate. Oltrevino's own list includes raw vegetable salads.

Try with: Trofie al pesto · Insalata Caprese · Radicchio risotto · Spring rolls · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Smoked salmon and fried seafood

Sharp acidity cuts the oil in smoked salmon and the batter on tempura, and the wine's grapefruit note freshens each bite. Keep it very cold.

Try with: Scottish Smoked Salmon · Prawn Tempura · Salt and pepper squid · Fish and Chips

Body matching Good match

Soft cheese and light starters

Oltrevino suggests soft cheese, and a light 12.5% white matches fresh goat's cheese or mozzarella without weighing them down. Its acidity cleans up the creaminess.

Try with: Insalata Caprese · Arancini · Cheese board · Frittata di maccheroni · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Sushi, sashimi and prawns

Citrus and a mineral streak suit raw fish and shellfish, and the light body lets soy and wasabi through. A light, bright Friuli Sauvignon like this one suits raw fish better than a richer white would.

Try with: Nigiri Sushi · Sashimi · Salt and pepper prawns · Tandoori prawns

Avoid Clash

Red meat, creamy sauces and hot curries

A light, sharp white tastes thin next to steak or a rich braise, which want a red such as a Chianti Classico. Heavy cream sauces flatten its acidity, and chilli heat makes it taste sour.

Skip with: Fiorentina steak · Brasato al Barolo · Chicken korma · Chicken madras · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

A wine estate west of Gorizia in Friuli Venezia Giulia, on the edge of the Collio hills, now owned by the Frescobaldi family of Tuscany. Records show Attems land under vines as far back as 1106, and the estate farms 44 hectares of south-facing terraces today.

Green and crisp: nettle, gooseberry and tomato leaf with grapefruit, peach and a mineral streak, at 12.5% and with no oak. Falstaff gave the 2024 91 points and called it very fresh with crisp acidity.

In steel throughout. About 15% of the grapes get a short cold soak on their skins and the juice settles for a day or two. It then ferments at 18 to 20C for 15 days and rests four months on its spent yeast. Attems skips the softening second fermentation to keep the acidity sharp.

No. Cicinis is the estate's single-vineyard Sauvignon, bottled as Collio DOC and aged in oak, and it costs more. This Venezia Giulia IGT is the fresh, steel-made entry Sauvignon.

Two shops tracked here list the 2025: vino.com at £14.90 on offer (£15.85 list) and xtrawine at £15.00. That is close to Wine-Searcher's worldwide average of about 14 euros before tax.

Fish and green food: steamed or grilled white fish, pesto, a caprese salad, smoked salmon and sushi. Its crisp acidity and light body suit soft cheese too. Keep it away from red meat, cream sauces and hot curries.
