Tasting Pietrarizzo: Carricante off the 1908 lava flow

Tornatore's own note calls out grapefruit and white peach; Vivino's 2,000-plus raters keep logging green apple, stone and flint. Both readings agree on the core: taut Carricante fruit over the volcanic-rocky soils of Contrada Pietrarizzo.

Grapefruit and white peach lead, just as Tornatore's own note has it, with the green apple, pear and pineapple-like exotic fruit that dominate Vivino's tree-fruit mentions. Underneath sits the flinty, smoky imprint drinkers log as stone and mineral, plus the early beeswax tone John Szabo found in the 2023.

Palate

Fermented at 15-16C in 50 hl oak casks and rested about five months on fine lees, so there is real mid-palate texture over the taut 13% frame. Acidity stays bright, and the salty, savoury grip of Contrada Pietrarizzo's volcanic-rocky soils at 650-700 m runs right through the ripe orchard fruit.

Finish

Long and saline, closing on wet stone with the faintly minty edge Vinatis' taster records in the 2023.

Overall

Tornatore's most structured white, from a contrada its neighbours have prized since the last century, and a 4.0 from more than 2,000 Vivino ratings shows the mineral style lands with drinkers. Lovely now; retailer guidance runs to 2035, so there is no hurry.

Wine fit score

How Pietrarizzo scores as an Italian wine pick

The scores below weigh the 2023's £26-28 UK price against its single-contrada pedigree, Tre Bicchieri-winning line and a drinking window Vinatis stretches to 2035.

Best with food 8.5/10

Saline, citrus-fresh Carricante spans raw shellfish, grilled swordfish and fried Sicilian snacks; Callmewine's and Vivino's pairing lists converge on seafood, top of the aromatic-white band.

Best value 8.0/10

price_aggregate is empty, so benchmarked editorially: £25.91-£28.48 live UK prices sit barely above the EUR 27 cellar-door price and about £5 over Tornatore's estate blend, strong for a named-contrada Etna Bianco with a 93 from Decanter.

Best for an occasion 7.8/10

Single-contrada cru from Sicily's first DOC with Tre Bicchieri pedigree and 91-95 critic scores across recent vintages: a confident dinner-party or gift white short of icon pricing.

Best intro to this style 6.8/10

A classic varietal expression of an indigenous Sicilian grape at a mid price, but its salty, stony profile reads austere next to fruit-led whites, so it lands mid-band.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Etna DOC, Sicily's first denomination

Etna gained DOC status in August 1968, the first in Sicily. The disciplinare demands at least 60% Carricante for Etna Bianco and caps yields at 9 tonnes per hectare; Tornatore crops Pietrarizzo at 6.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Etna is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

The denomination rules, in detail

  • Allowed grapes. 4 varieties listed in the disciplinare
  • Yield ceiling. 9.0 tonnes per hectare
  • Minimum ABV. 12.5% vol
  • Minimum ageing. No statutory minimum - producers release on their own schedule

03

Region and area context

Etna falls within Sicily , covering Parts of 20 communes on the slopes of Mount Etna, all in the province of Catania. The denomination is further divided into 4 sub-zones.

Main factor
Single-contrada fruit from Pietrarizzo, cropped at 6 t/ha
  1. 01

Single-contrada fruit from Pietrarizzo, cropped at 6 t/ha

    Cost up

Tornatore declares 60 quintali per hectare for this cru, a third under the Etna DOC ceiling of 9 t/ha, so each vine carries less fruit than the estate-blend Etna Bianco that sells for around EUR 21 in Italy.

  2. 02

Hand harvest and manual sorting at 650-700 m on the north slope

    Cost up

The producer picks in small boxes in the second decade of October and sorts by hand on a belt; mountain viticulture at this altitude on volcanic rock cannot be mechanised cheaply.

  3. 03

50 hl oak fermentation plus five months on fine lees

    Cost up

Fermenting at 15-16C in 50 hl oak casks, then about five months of lees ageing and three more in bottle per Callmewine, ties up cellar space a tank-raised white frees within weeks.

  4. 04

Critic pedigree: 93 Decanter for the 2023, Tre Bicchieri line

    Cost up

The 2023 carries 93 from Decanter and 92 from Jeb Dunnuck, and the wine took Gambero Rosso's Tre Bicchieri for the 2020; that record supports prized-cru Etna pricing.

  5. 05

Scale of one of Etna's largest family estates

    Cost down

Vinatis calls Tornatore one of Etna's largest family-run estates; that scale is why a named-cru Carricante lands at £26-28 in the UK, only a few pounds above the estate blend.

  6. 06

UK duty and VAT on a £28.48 bottle

    Cost up

HMRC duty on a still wine at 13% abv is £2.67 a bottle; with VAT at 20% on top, roughly £7.40 of Vinatis' £28.48 price is tax before a drop is poured.

01

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that complement this wine

Food Pairing

Salt meets salt: dishes for a volcanic Carricante

The wine's saline, citrus-fresh profile is built for seafood. Callmewine's Italian buyers point it at sushi, seafood risotto and grilled fish; Vivino's crowd adds shellfish and antipasti.

Salt balance Strong match

Oysters and raw shellfish

Pietrarizzo's saline grip comes off the volcanic-rocky soils of the 1908 lava flow, so salt in the wine meets brine in the shellfish instead of fighting it. The 13% frame is light enough to leave delicate oyster liquor intact.

Try with: Oysters · Sashimi · Impepata di cozze

Acidity matching Strong match

Sicilian swordfish and grilled fish

Grapefruit-fresh acidity mirrors the lemon and caper sharpness of Sicilian fish cookery, while the wine's stony depth stands up to char from the grill. An Etna white for the island's own swordfish.

Try with: Pesce spada alla Siciliana · Cozze arraganate · Polpo alla pignata · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Seafood pasta, fregula and squid-ink risotto

Five months on fine lees in 50 hl casks gives Pietrarizzo enough mid-palate to match starchy seafood dishes where a leaner white would vanish. Its freshness keeps rich, briny sauces moving.

Try with: Fregula ai frutti di mare · Squid ink risotto · Baccala Mantecato · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Fried Sicilian street food

High acidity and a salty finish scrub the fat from fried rice and dough, the classic role of a fresh white against Sicily's friggitoria plates. Arancini with a Carricante from the same island is the direct regional call.

Try with: Arancini · Pizza Fritta · Panzerotti · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Sushi, sashimi and delicate raw fish

Callmewine's own pairing list for this bottle starts with sushi and sashimi: citrus and wet-stone minerality bridge to nori and soy salinity with no oak in the way. Delicate raw fish lets the contrada character speak.

Try with: Sashimi · Nigiri Sushi · Steamed sea bass · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Chilli heat and heavy braised meat

Hot chilli inflames the wine's taut acidity and buries its flinty detail, and long-braised red meat wants tannin a saline white cannot offer. Keep it away from vindaloo heat and Barolo-braised beef alike.

Skip with: Lamb vindaloo · Brasato al Barolo · Sweet and sour prawns · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Cellaring Pietrarizzo: a white that repays patience

Vinatis lists the 2023 to drink until 2035, and WineAlign's John Szabo already finds beeswax depth in it. Carricante's track record on Etna supports holding a few bottles past their fifth birthday.

Drinking window
2025 → 2035

Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.

Decanting
no

A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.

Cellar potential
Medium

Etna DOC sets no ageing mandate for Bianco, yet Vinatis lists the 2023 to 2035, and five months of lees plus Carricante's record on Etna lift it well above everyday-white territory.

Common Questions

The 2023 is 100% Carricante, according to Tornatore's own product page. Etna DOC rules only require 60% Carricante in a Bianco, and earlier Pietrarizzo vintages carried a touch of Catarratto, so the pure-Carricante 2023 is a deliberate statement of the contrada's character.

On the volcano's north slope in the commune of Castiglione di Sicilia, with vines between 650 and 700 m above sea level. The soil is volcanic rock broken down from the 1908 lava flow, and Tornatore says locals have counted Pietrarizzo among the most prized crus since the last century.

Grapes are hand-picked in small boxes in the second half of October, sorted by hand on a belt, softly pressed, then fermented at 15-16C in 50 hl oak casks. The wine rests about five months on fine lees and, per Callmewine's sheet, at least three more in bottle before release.

Vinatis lists the 2023 to drink until 2035, roughly a decade from harvest. It is citrus-fresh now, and WineAlign's John Szabo already notes an emerging beeswax tone, the direction good Carricante takes as it ages.

The two UK retailers tracked on this page currently list the 2023 between £25.91 and £28.48. That compares with EUR 27 at the winery's own shop, and sits only a few pounds above Tornatore's estate Etna Bianco despite the single-contrada sourcing.

Seafood leads: Sicilian grilled swordfish, oysters, seafood fregula and sushi all suit its salty acidity. Callmewine's buyers also point it at white meats, and Vivino drinkers pour it with antipasti and vegetarian plates.
