Cherry, red berries and spice are the aromas Cantine Riondo lists on its own sheet. In drinkers' notes on Vivino, oak, vanilla and caramel come up most, then plum and blackberry. Xtrawine's note adds raisin, which fits a wine refermented on the skins of dried Amarone grapes.
Dry and full-bodied, as Riondo describes it, even with 7 grams of sugar a litre on its sheet. Riondo ferments it with the Ganimede system, which keeps the skins moving to draw out colour and tannin. Even so, Xtrawine's note calls the tannins soft. Plum, blackberry and cherry fill the middle at 13.5%.
Xtrawine's note calls the finish long and spicy. The oak and vanilla that drinkers mention fit a wine that spends 12 months partly in oak casks and partly in steel tanks.
A soft, full-bodied Ripasso that sits between the Valpolicella Superiore and the Amarone in Riondo's range. Vivino drinkers rate it 3.8 from 1,538 ratings across vintages; drink the 2022 now and by 2027.
How Riondo's Valpolicella Ripasso scores out of ten
Cantine Riondo aims this Ripasso at roasts, stews and long-aged cheese. The ripe 2022 is one to drink now rather than keep, so it scores low for the cellar.
Soft, fruity and dry despite 7 grams of sugar a litre, with gentle tannins, it is an easy first Ripasso, and Vivino drinkers rate it 3.8 out of 5.
Built for roasts, stews and long-aged cheese, as Riondo says, with the soft tannins Xtrawine notes, so it is easy with hearty food.
Low-priced for a Ripasso and easy to drink, it suits a weekend roast better than a light weeknight supper, given its full body and 13.5% alcohol.
A plain DOC Ripasso from a co-operative group's brand, it makes a good Sunday-lunch red rather than a bottle for a big celebration.
Aged 12 months partly in oak casks and released young, the ripe 2022 is one to drink by 2027 rather than lay down.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Riondo's 2022 Ripasso: a hot, dry year in Valpolicella
The 2022 growing year brought heat and drought to Valpolicella, and the young reds came out ripe and full. The Ripasso rules kept Riondo's 2022 off sale until at least January 2024, and it is best drunk by 2027.

Roasts, stews and aged cheese: where Riondo's Ripasso fits
Cantine Riondo matches this Ripasso with roast and grilled red meat, stews and long-aged cheese. Its soft tannins and full body suit slow-cooked, savoury food far better than chilli heat.
Roast and grilled beef
Protein and fat in red meat soften tannin, and this full-bodied Valpolicella Ripasso has the weight to match a roast. Riondo names roast and grilled red meat first for this wine.
Try with: Sunday Roast Beef · Ribeye steak · Sirloin steak · Fillet steak · More pairings →
Slow-cooked beef and veal
Braised meat is rich and soft, so it needs a red of similar weight rather than a sharp, light one. This Ripasso is full-bodied and gentle, and Riondo lists stewed meat among its matches.
Try with: Brasato al Barolo · Ossobuco alla Milanese · Carbonade · Beef stew · More pairings →
Hard, long-aged cheese
Salt in an aged cheese softens tannin and makes red fruit taste riper. Riondo pairs this Ripasso with long-aged cheese, and a full-bodied Valpolicella Ripasso stands up to a strong one.
Try with: Parmigiano Reggiano · Strong cheddar cheese · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Cheese board
Venison and other game
Game tastes dark and earthy, which meets the plum, leather and cocoa notes drinkers find in this Ripasso. Vivino lists game such as venison among its matches, with beef and veal.
Try with: Venison Stew · Roast Pheasant · Duck breast · Porcini mushroom risotto
Lasagne and meat ragù
A slow meat ragù is rich and savoury, and a soft, full-bodied red like this Valpolicella Ripasso carries that weight. Keep the sauce meat-led rather than sharp with tomato, to match the soft, velvety style Xtrawine describes.
Try with: Lasagna · Ragu alla bolognese · Casoncelli · Anelletti al forno · More pairings →
Hot curries and chilli
Chilli heat makes alcohol burn and turns oak and tannin bitter. At 13.5%, with the oak and vanilla drinkers pick up, this Ripasso fights a hot curry instead of cooling it.
Skip with: Jungle Curry · Red Curry · Crispy chilli beef · Szechuan beef · Pairing guide →
Keeping Riondo's 2022 Ripasso: drink it by 2027
Riondo's 2022 Ripasso is one to drink rather than lay down, best drunk by 2027. Riondo suggests serving it at 18 to 20°C.
Best in the years above; holds without falling over either side.
A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.
Aim for the cooler end on a warm day; warmer end opens up more aromatics.
Aged 12 months partly in oak casks and released young, the ripe 2022 is one to drink by 2027 rather than lay down.

Common Questions
Corvina, Rondinella and Corvinone, plus other grapes, according to Cantine Riondo's own sheet. The Valpolicella Ripasso DOC rules ask for 45% to 95% Corvina, part of which can be Corvinone, and 5% to 30% Rondinella. Other red grapes can make up no more than a quarter of the blend.
In winter, Cantine Riondo pours its young Valpolicella over the skins left from making Amarone, and the wine ferments again. Riondo says this raises the alcohol, body and scent. The wine then spends 12 months partly in steel tanks and partly in oak casks.
Cantine Riondo's own page for this wine does not call it organic. Xtrawine lists it as organic, and Riondo does make a certified organic line of wines. If it matters to you, look for the EU organic leaf on the label.
Roast and grilled red meat, stews and long-aged cheese, which is Cantine Riondo's own list. Vivino lists beef, veal and game such as venison as matches. Avoid hot curries, where chilli heat clashes with its oak and 13.5% alcohol.
Drink it by about 2027, five years after the 2022 harvest. The Ripasso rules kept the 2022 off sale until January 2024 at the earliest. Xtrawine suggests five to ten years, and we take the low end of that, counted from the harvest.
Cantine Riondo, a company set up in 2008 to sell the wine of the Collis Veneto Wine Group. The group's 2,000 member growers farm vines across the provinces of Verona, Vicenza and Padua. Riondo is its main brand, named after Monte Riondo, a small hill near its base in Monteforte d'Alpone.
