Cherry and raspberry first, the red fruit that 1,107 Vivino reviewers mention, then stewed plum and blackberry from the drying loft. Behind them sit vanilla and a little tobacco from the oak, and a lift of violet that Majestic's buyers pick out.

Palate

Full and velvety at 14%, which is what drying the grapes in crates does to Corvina and Croatina, with Merlot filling out the middle. The tannin is soft. The wine is dry, but the fruit tastes so ripe that it reads as jammy.

Finish

Long and warm, with the leather and spice Pasqua's own sheet describes lasting after the fruit has gone.

Wine fit score

How PassioneSentimento scores for food, value and everyday drinking

Four scores out of ten. It rates highest for someone new to Italian wine, then with food, then on value at £11.50 to £15.30, and well as an everyday bottle.

Best intro to this style 8.8/10

Soft, ripe and jammy, and one of Majestic's most popular Italian reds by its own account.

Best with food 8.5/10

Ragù, roasts, polenta, mushrooms and cheese all fit. Only chilli and delicate fish do not.

Best value 8.2/10

£11.50 to £15.30 for a dried-grape red that James Suckling has scored 90 and 91 across recent vintages.

Best everyday bottle 7.0/10

At £11.50 in a mixed six it is a weeknight bottle. At 14% it is a heavy one.

Best for an occasion 4.0/10

Generous and easy to like, but a Veneto IGT at £15 does not mark a big night.

Best for cellar 3.0/10

Three months in oak and a jammy style. Drink it within three or four years.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The 2023 is the vintage in both shops, at 14%. Pasqua's own sheet lists 13% for the 2021, so the alcohol moves a little from year to year with how far the grapes dry.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

A dried-grape red from eastern Valpolicella, labelled Veneto IGT

The grapes grow on the eastern Valpolicella slopes in the province of Verona and are dried the way Amarone's are. The bottle carries the broad Veneto IGT name rather than Valpolicella, which is part of why it costs £15 and not £40.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Veneto is in the IGT tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Main factor
Drying the grapes costs 30% of the juice
  1. 01

Drying the grapes costs 30% of the juice

    Cost up

Pasqua dries the hand-picked bunches in wooden crates in a loft with controlled humidity and airflow until they lose around 30% of their water. That is 30% less wine from the same grapes, plus weeks of loft space.

  2. 02

    Three months in oak barrels

    Cost up

The finished blend spends three months in oak barrels before bottling. Short by Amarone standards, but still barrels to buy and cellar space to fill.

  3. 03

Veneto IGT on the label, not Valpolicella or Amarone

    Cost down

The grapes come from eastern Valpolicella, but the label carries the broad Veneto IGT name. That keeps the wine clear of Amarone pricing while using the same drying method.

  4. 04

Made at scale by one of Verona's biggest houses

    Cost down

Pasqua lists 204 wines on Vivino and has drawn 251,983 ratings there. A red made in that volume spreads the cost of the loft, the presses and the sales team thinly across every bottle.

  5. 05

    Majestic's mixed-six price

    Cost down

Majestic sells it at £14.50 alone and £11.50 a bottle in any six. The shop's discount, not the winery, sets the low end of the price.

  6. 06

    UK duty and VAT

    Cost up

A 14% wine carries just over £3 of duty on the February 2026 rates, and VAT takes a fifth of the price. Roughly £5.60 of the £14.50 is tax before the wine is counted.

Food Pairing

Soft, ripe and 14%: what fits PassioneSentimento

Majestic puts it with meat ragù over pasta. Vivino's matches are beef, lamb, pasta and game, and vino.com adds roasts, first courses and aged cheese. Rich, savoury food is the common thread.

Tannin softening Strong match

Meat ragù over pasta

Majestic's own match for this wine is meat ragù piled over pasta. The soft tannin never fights the meat, and the wine's ripe, jammy fruit sits happily next to slow-cooked tomato.

Try with: Ragu alla bolognese · Lasagna · Anelletti al forno · Agnolotti del Plin · More pairings →

Fat cutting Strong match

Roast beef, lamb and game

Vivino lists beef, lamb and game as matches. Roast meat is rich and fatty, and a full, 14% red with soft tannin has the weight to meet it while its fruit keeps the plate from feeling heavy.

Try with: Sunday Roast Beef · Roast Lamb with Mint Sauce · Steak and Kidney Pie · Venison Stew · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Polenta and slow-cooked northern dishes

Braised beef and polenta are soft, rich and mild rather than sharp. This wine is the same shape, full and gentle, so neither side shouts over the other.

Try with: Brasato al Barolo · Polenta alla Valdostana · Carbonade · Canederli · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Mushroom risotto and truffle

Vino.com says the wine goes well with mushroom dishes. The leather and spice Pasqua describes sit close to the earthy smell of porcini and truffle, so the plate and the glass echo each other.

Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Truffle risotto · Radicchio risotto · Tagliatelle al tartufo di Acqualagna · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Aged cheese

Aged cheese is on vino.com's list for this wine. Salt makes a ripe red taste fruitier and less alcoholic, which suits a wine at 14% with plenty of jammy fruit to show.

Try with: Caciocavallo farcito · Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · Fonduta · Frico · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Skip fierce chilli and delicate fish

Chilli heat makes a 14% wine taste hot and hollow. Delicate fish has the opposite problem: a wine this full and jammy simply buries it.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Szechuan beef · Baccala Mantecato · Polenta e schie · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Keeping PassioneSentimento: drink it young

Three months in oak and a soft, jammy style make this a wine for the next three or four years, not the cellar. Serve it at 16 to 18 degrees, as vino.com suggests.

Common Questions

Corvina and Croatina with a share of Merlot, which Pasqua says the drying makes even more velvety. All three are dried in crates before they are pressed.

Yes. Pasqua calls it PassioneSentimento, the founding wine of its Romeo and Juliet range, and Majestic lists it under both names. The old name Passimento is still in the shop's web address.

The grapes are picked by hand and dried in wooden crates in a loft with controlled humidity and airflow until they lose about 30% of their water. Each grape ferments on its own in steel, then the blend spends three months in oak barrels.

Cherry and raspberry, stewed plum and blackberry, vanilla and a hint of tobacco, with a soft, velvety feel at 14%. On Vivino 24,846 ratings average 3.9 out of 5.

Meat ragù over pasta is Majestic's match, and Vivino adds beef, lamb and game. It also suits mushroom risotto, polenta dishes and aged cheese.

£14.50 at Majestic, or £11.50 a bottle in any mixed six, and £15.30 on offer at vino.com. James Suckling scored the 2020 at 90 points and the 2017 and 2016 at 91.
