Tar, rose and red cherry: tasting La Spinetta's Valeirano

Drinker consensus on Vivino and the estate's own notes converge on a savoury, structured Nebbiolo: tar and rose over red cherry, with leather, tobacco and a tea-leaf, balsamic lift. Drawn from 910 Vivino reviews and La Spinetta's tasting note.

What it costs to buy Barbaresco Valeirano now

Two UK merchants list the 2017 between £126 and £145 a bottle, both in stock. La Spinetta makes only about 7,000 bottles of this Treiso cru a year, so it is scarcer than the estate's regular Barbaresco.

Wine fit score

How Barbaresco Valeirano scores for food, cellar and occasion

A scoring snapshot for this single-vineyard Nebbiolo: strong at the table and built to cellar, priced as a special-occasion Langhe red rather than an everyday pour.

Best with food 9.0/10

High acidity and firm tannin make this a structured food Barbaresco for braised meat, truffle and aged cheese.

Best for cellar 8.8/10

Barbaresco DOCG ageing, barrique maturation and marine-marl structure give the best vintages 15 years or more of cellar life.

Best for an occasion 8.8/10

A 95-point single-vineyard Barbaresco from La Spinetta's Vursu line is a benchmark special-occasion Langhe red.

Best value 5.8/10

At £126 to £145 it is priced as a premium single-vineyard cru; the 95-point pedigree supports the price but it is not an everyday-value buy.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Why the 2017 Valeirano drinks the way it does

The 2017 growing season was hot and dry across the Langhe, giving a riper, more approachable Valeirano. Antonio Galloni rated it 95 points and called it the silkiest of La Spinetta's 2017 crus, with tannin that still carries the wine.

A hot, dry 2017 growing season across the Langhe produced a riper, more approachable Valeirano with silkier tannins than structured years like 2016. It drinks well now and should hold into the early 2030s; Galloni and Wine Advocate both scored it 95 points.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Treiso, marine marl and the Vursu single-vineyard line

La Spinetta bought Valeirano in 1997 and bottles it as a Vursu single-vineyard cru. The Treiso site sits at 380 metres on marine-origin marl close in character to Serralunga d'Alba, which lends this Barbaresco a firm, Barolo-like structure.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Barbaresco is in the DOCG tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

02

  1. 01

Single-vineyard Valeirano cru, about 7,000 bottles a year

    Cost up

La Spinetta makes only around 7,000 bottles of this Treiso cru a year from 2.5 hectares, so scarcity sits behind the £126-plus UK price.

  2. 02

    55-year-old Nebbiolo vines, low yields

    Cost up

Vines averaging 55 years on marine marl give concentrated, low-yield fruit that costs more to grow than young-vine Langhe Nebbiolo.

  3. 03

French oak barrique ageing, 20% new

    Cost up

Around 18 to 20 months in French oak barriques, a fifth of them new each year, adds barrel and cellar cost before release.

  4. 04

Barbaresco DOCG ageing and release rules

    Cost up

DOCG status requires at least 24 months of ageing and a release tasting, tying up capital and guaranteeing the wine's pedigree.

  5. 05

    UK duty and VAT

    Cost up

UK still-wine duty of £2.67 a bottle plus 20% VAT account for roughly £24 of the £126 shelf price before the merchant's margin.

  6. 06

    Barbaresco, not Barolo pricing

    Cost down

As Barbaresco rather than Barolo, Valeirano is priced below La Spinetta's Barolo crus of comparable quality and critical standing.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that complement this wine

Food Pairing

Nebbiolo tannin and acidity: dishes that fit Valeirano

Valeirano's firm tannin and bright acidity are built for the Langhe table: braised beef, plin agnolotti, truffle tajarin and porcini risotto. Its savoury, earthy register also bridges to mushrooms, aged cheese and game.

Tannin softening Strong match

Braised beef and Piedmontese stews

Valeirano's firm Nebbiolo tannin needs the protein and fat of slow-braised beef. The collagen-rich sauce of brasato rounds the tannin while the wine's acidity lifts the richness.

Try with: Brasato al Barolo · Bollito dei Pastori · Ossobuco alla Milanese · More pairings →

Acidity matching Strong match

Langhe pasta with butter and truffle

Bright Nebbiolo acidity cuts the egg richness of tajarin and plin, while the wine's earthy, savoury core mirrors white Alba truffle and brown butter.

Try with: Tajarin al Tartufo · Agnolotti del Plin · Tagliatelle al tartufo · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Earthy mushrooms and forest-floor dishes

The wine's tobacco, leather and forest-floor notes bridge to porcini and dried mushroom, and the tannin frames their umami depth.

Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Truffle risotto · Radicchio risotto · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Game and roast red meat

A structured, savoury Barbaresco matches the weight of venison, wild boar and roast red meat without being overwhelmed, the tannin keeping pace with the protein.

Try with: Fiorentina steak · Roast lamb · Venison ragù · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Aged Piedmontese cheese

Nebbiolo tannin and acidity cut through hard, fatty alpine cheese such as Castelmagno and aged Toma, and the wine's savoury length echoes the rind.

Try with: Castelmagno · Aged Toma · Parmigiano Reggiano · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Fiery chilli heat and sweet glazes

High tannin amplifies chilli heat and turns harsh against sweet-spicy glazes, while delicate raw fish is flattened by the wine's structure and tar.

Skip with: Vindaloo · Sweet-and-sour pork · Sushi · Spicy Sichuan · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Cellaring a single-vineyard Barbaresco

Grown on 55-year-old vines and marine marl, the best vintages of Valeirano reward a decade or more in the cellar. The 2017's softer tannins make it approachable earlier than structured years like 2016.

Decanting
h1

A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.

Cellar potential
High

Barbaresco DOCG ageing, barrique maturation and marine-marl structure give the best vintages 15 years or more of cellar life.
