Red cherry and raspberry lift first, then the savoury Radda signature drinkers flag most: leather, woodsmoke and forest floor. Cedar and tobacco follow from two years in Allier barrique and Slavonian botti, with a twist of liquorice and black pepper.
Montevertine Le Pergole Torte
Azienda Agricola Montevertine
Tuscany's pioneering 100% Sangiovese, first made in 1977 from Montevertine's high galestro vineyards at Radda in Chianti. Bold and earthy, with red cherry, leather and cedar over firm tannin, aged in Allier barrique and Slavonian oak. Toscana IGT.
Tasting notes: Montevertine's Radda Sangiovese
Drinker consensus on Vivino (4.5 from nearly 14,000 ratings) and Antonio Galloni's Vinous notes converge on one picture: red cherry and leather, cedar and woodsmoke, firm tannin and the bright acidity of high-elevation Radda fruit.

Bold but not heavy, with the bright acidity and firm, fine tannin of Sangiovese grown at 400 to 450 metres on galestro. Red and black cherry sit against an earthy, almost ferrous mineral streak the producer traces to the iron-rich Pergole Torte plot. Concrete fermentation and no filtration keep the fruit transparent and the texture chalky.
The finish is long and savoury, leather and cedar trailing a core of sour-cherry acidity that calls for food. In structured vintages like 2022 it tightens and, as Galloni puts it, explodes on the back end.
This is Montevertine's flagship and one of Tuscany's benchmark pure Sangioveses, adored on Vivino at 4.5 from nearly 14,000 ratings. A collector's bottle for patient drinkers: open the cooler 2014 now, lay the 2022 down for a decade.
Le Pergole Torte: current vintages and prices
Live listings run from the current 2022 release around £174 to large-format older vintages like the 2014 in a 3-litre bottle. Stock is thin: Le Pergole Torte is made in small quantities and sells through allocation at merchants like Berry Bros & Rudd.
Le Pergole Torte: food, cellar and value at a glance
A structured, high-acid Sangiovese scores well at the table and in the cellar, less so as an everyday pour: at £170 and up it is a special-occasion and collector bottle, not a Tuesday-night red.
Firm tannin, bright acidity and two years in Allier barrique and Slavonian botti give top vintages two decades or more in the cellar.
High-acid, firm-tannin Sangiovese is one of the most food-friendly reds, cutting fat and matching savoury Tuscan cooking from steak to game.
A cult, critically lauded Tuscan Sangiovese at a special-occasion price: a benchmark bottle to mark the moment.
At £170 and up it is a serious outlay, but for a 97 to 98 point benchmark Sangiovese with decades of cellar life the quality-to-price ratio holds against its peers.
Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

Le Pergole Torte vintages: 2014 to 2022
Vintage matters here. The rain-marked, cooler 2014 made a leaner, aromatic, earlier-drinking Pergole Torte, while the hot, drought-touched 2022 is dense and age-worthy, rated 97+ by Galloni and 98 by James Suckling.

A cool, rain-marked vintage across Chianti, kinder to high, well-drained sites like Montevertine's. Expect a leaner, aromatic Pergole Torte with marked acidity and earlier-drinking charm rather than the density of warm years. Drinking well now.

Perfect Pairings
Dishes that complement this wine
Sangiovese acidity and tannin: what fits Le Pergole Torte
Montevertine pours this with roast meats, game, noble poultry and aged cheeses. Its high-acid, firm-tannin Sangiovese cuts through fat and answers savoury, umami-led cooking, from bistecca alla fiorentina to wild boar ragu.
Florentine steak and grilled red meat
Firm Sangiovese tannin and bright acidity cut the fat and char of a rare Florentine T-bone. The wine's savoury, earthy core meets the seared crust without being overwhelmed.
Try with: Fiorentina steak · tagliata · grilled lamb · porterhouse · More pairings →
Game and slow-cooked ragu
High acidity lifts rich, gamey, slow-braised sauces and keeps them fresh. The wine's forest-floor and leather notes echo the meat rather than fight it.
Try with: Agnello Ragu Lucano · pappardelle al cinghiale · wild boar ragu · braised hare · More pairings →
Mushroom, truffle and earthy dishes
The wine's forest-floor, leather and earth aromatics bridge directly to porcini, truffle and umami-led cooking. Acidity stops creamy risottos turning heavy.
Try with: Porcini mushroom risotto · Truffle risotto · porcini pasta · mushroom crostini · More pairings →
Aged pecorino and hard cheese
Acidity and tannin balance salty, fatty aged sheep's and cow's cheese. The savoury wine matches the nutty, crystalline texture of long-aged rounds.
Try with: Pecorino sardo e pan carasau · aged Pecorino Toscano · Parmigiano Reggiano · grana padano · More pairings →
Noble poultry and roast meats
Medium-full body and fine tannin match roast guinea fowl, pigeon, duck and veal, the noble poultry Montevertine names on its own sheet. Neither side dominates.
Try with: Roast pork · duck breast · roast veal · guinea fowl · More pairings →
Chilli heat and sweet-sour sauces
Firm tannin and 13.5% alcohol amplify capsaicin heat, while sugar in sweet-sour sauces makes the wine taste hollow and sour. Delicate Sangiovese fruit gets buried.
Skip with: Lamb bhuna · Szechuan beef · sweet-and-sour pork · chilli hotpot · Pairing guide →
Cellaring Le Pergole Torte
Built to age. Two years in Allier barrique and Slavonian botti, firm tannin and Radda acidity carry top vintages two decades or more. The 2022 is one to bury; the cooler 2014 rewards drinking over the next several years.
A short splash decant softens the first-pour edge and opens the aromatics.
Firm tannin, bright acidity and two years in Allier barrique and Slavonian botti give top vintages two decades or more in the cellar.
