Azienda Agricola Massaro

Massaro is a small family estate at Negrar, in the Valpolicella hills north of Verona. The grandfather farmed this land for a landlord and kept none of the wine. His son Valentino bought the vineyards back. In 2015 Valentino's sons stopped selling their grapes to others and began bottling their own, naming the estate after their mother, Norma. They make three reds: Valpolicella Classico, Ripasso and Amarone. The cellar stands on Via Villa, minutes from a Roman villa they take visitors to see.

About Azienda Agricola Massaro

Three generations stand behind this small cellar. The grandfather worked these slopes as a sharecropper, farming land he did not own. His son Valentino bought those same vineyards and kept the family on them. In 2015 Valentino's sons made the biggest change of all. They stopped selling the harvest to bigger houses and started making the wine themselves. They put their mother's name on the label, so the estate is called Massaro Norma.

The vineyards sit in Valpolicella Classica, the older heart of the region in the hills above Verona. The rows face the sun for most of the day, which suits the local grapes. Corvina and Corvinone give the wine its cherry fruit and its bite. Rondinella adds colour and keeps the blend fresh. Molinara, an old local grape now planted far less than it once was, still turns up in small amounts here.

The house makes three reds and nothing else. Valpolicella Classico is the light one, poured young and cool, and it tastes of sour cherry. Ripasso is that same wine given a second push on the skins left over from Amarone, which makes it rounder and warmer. Amarone della Valpolicella is the big one, made from bunches left to dry on racks through the winter until the sugar concentrates. Drying grapes this way is the oldest trick in the valley, and it is what gives Amarone its dried-fruit depth and its strength.

Visitors are welcome and the family runs the tastings themselves. One visit is a tasting with a light lunch of Lessinia cheeses and Verona salami. The other pairs the wines with a guided walk round a Roman villa nearby, where original mosaic floors survive under the vineyards. Both are booked ahead. The cellar is on Via Villa in Negrar di Valpolicella, twenty minutes north of Verona, and parking is free.
