Tenuta Montauto

Tenuta Montauto lies inland from the Maremma coast, near Manciano and about ten kilometres from the sea. The same family has farmed here for more than sixty years, and Riccardo Lepri turned it into a wine estate in 2001. Sea breezes and cold nights make this white-wine country. One Italian guide named its Sauvignon the best in the country in 2024. Seven visits can be booked, the cheapest at nine euros fifty for a glass and a sit-down.

About Tenuta Montauto

The land has been in one family for more than sixty years. Riccardo Lepri's grandfather, Enos, put in the first vines, and he chose Sauvignon Blanc, because ten kilometres from the sea looked like white-wine country to him. Riccardo came home in the summer of 2000, fresh from an economics degree at Siena, and joined that year's harvest. He says the smell of Sauvignon grapes on his hands is what made him stay. The estate took its present shape in 2001, and its top white still carries his grandfather's name. The 2024 vintage of Enos I holds Tre Bicchieri from the Gambero Rosso guide.

Montauto sits about 200 metres up, ten kilometres inland from the sea at Capalbio. That is close enough for the sea breeze to reach the rows, and high enough for the nights to turn cold. The soil is clay, packed with quartz. Those three things together do what white wine needs. They hold the acidity up and keep the aromas sharp. In 2024 the Guida Essenziale ai Vini d'Italia named the estate's Sauvignon the best in Italy.

The vines are worked without chemical sprays, using only copper and sulphur, and fed with stable manure. The estate does not claim organic certification, and names no certifying body on its site. All the power the winery uses comes from renewable sources, and the Ciliegiolo is made without animal products, so it suits vegans.

Whites lead the range, four of the ten. Enos I, Gessaia and Poggio del Crine are all Sauvignon, and Riflesso is a Vermentino. The reds are Silio, a Ciliegiolo from Maremma Toscana that James Suckling scored 92, and two Pinot Neros. Staccione is a Sangiovese rosé. There is also a sparkling Sangiovese made by the Metodo Classico, and a vermouth built on Vermentino.

Visits start small and go a long way up. Nine euros fifty buys a glass and half an hour. Fifty buys the vineyard, the winery, the cellar and the barrel room. The oddest is a two-and-a-half-hour drive round the estate in a four-wheel drive, stopping in its best vineyards. The estate also runs evening tastings, and makes a good deal of how dark the night sky is over this corner of the Maremma.
