Fattoria Svetoni is a winery and wine resort in Gracciano, in the province of Siena. The hill town of Montepulciano is a short drive away. Sangiovese vineyards surround a villa that began life as a farm in the late 1700s. The Svetoni family started making wine here in 1865, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano now leads the range. Visitors can tour the old cellar under the villa, book a tasting and stay in one of twelve rooms. Osmosi, the restaurant inside, holds a Michelin star.
The farm was commissioned by Pietro Leopoldo, Grand Duke of Tuscany, at the end of the 1700s. Building work ended in the middle of the next century. Wine came in 1865, when the Svetoni family began to make it here. The estate changed hands a few times after that. In 2017 Podere Rubino bought it, along with its vineyards. The company was set up by six friends who share a love of wine and of this land. The old farm is now a villa with twelve rooms, and the cellar beneath it still makes the wine.
The vineyards cover 23 hectares, about 32 football pitches, at 300 to 350 metres above sea level. The estate points to good airflow, a big swing between day and night temperatures and few storms. Its main grape is Prugnolo Gentile, as Sangiovese is known around Montepulciano. Every red the estate makes is mostly or wholly Sangiovese, and so is its rosé. The DoctorWine guide puts total output at about 80,000 bottles a year.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a DOCG red, leads the range. Next come a Rosso di Montepulciano, sold as a DOC, and a Chianti Colli Senesi. A red called Leo, a Vermentino white and a rosé carry the regional IGT label for Tuscany. The top wine is Selezione La Croce, a Vino Nobile from the estate's oldest vineyard, where the vines are about 45 years old. Only around 1,000 bottles are made each year. The grapes are picked by hand from early October. The wine then ages for two years in large casks of Slavonian oak and six more months in bottle. The estate expects it to last 15 to 20 years.
The cellar sits right under the villa and holds barriques as well as large casks. Most visits start with a walk through it. The estate sells eleven tastings on its own website. The cheapest pairs a tour with three wines and the estate's olive oil. Others add a board of Tuscan cheeses and cured meats, pinsa, a light lunch or time in the spa. One is a private tasting in the cellar. Winalist and Winedering sell several of the same tastings.
Chef Mirko Marcelli runs the kitchen at Osmosi, the villa's restaurant, which the Michelin Guide awards one star. The villa also has an outdoor pool, open from mid-May to mid-October, and a spa with a sauna and a Turkish bath. Pienza and the villages of the Val d'Orcia are within easy reach.
