Castello Pomino - Marchesi Frescobaldi
Castello Pomino is the Frescobaldi family's mountain estate at Pomino, east of Florence, where vines climb to 700 metres among firs and sweet chestnut. The estate dates from 1500, and its whites and sparkling wines are unusual for red-wine Tuscany. In 1716 Grand Duke Cosimo III named Pomino among Tuscany's four most prized wine territories. Chardonnay and Pinot Nero lead, with the Leonia sparkling wines made the traditional way in bottle. Visitors can taste, lunch, and stay the night in one of five castle rooms.

About Castello Pomino - Marchesi Frescobaldi
Pomino is where Tuscany starts to feel alpine. The estate sits in the first mountains east of Florence, on the edge of the Foreste Casentinesi national park. Sequoias, firs and chestnut trees stand around the vineyards. The castle that names the estate was built in 1500.
The place has been on Tuscany's wine map for three centuries. In 1716 Grand Duke Cosimo III de' Medici named the four most prized wine territories of Tuscany. The notice is now seen as the ancestor of the modern DOC system. Pomino was on the list, beside Chianti, Carmignano and Val d'Arno di Sopra. Its wines went on to win awards at the 1873 World's Fair in Vienna, then a gold medal in Paris in 1878.
The altitude sets the style. This is white and sparkling country inside red-wine Tuscany. Benefizio tells the story of Chardonnay in the region. Pomino Bianco and Pomino Pinot Nero carry the Pomino DOC, and there is a Vin Santo and a late-harvest white. The Leonia wines complete the range: a brut, a rosé, and the Chardonnay selection Éternelle. All are made by the metodo classico; Éternelle comes from a single vineyard at the top of the estate.
Visits run on request. Three experiences can be booked: a tour called Discovering the Pomino region from 57 euros, a Leonia-focused visit from 80, and a VIP Frescobaldi lunch at 150. Staying the night is possible too. The castle lets five rooms in the old house, with shared sitting rooms and a garden with a hydromassage pool. Tuscan meals show off the estate's wines.
