Castello di Monterinaldi

Castello Monterinaldi sits on a hill at Lucarelli, in the parish of Radda in Chianti. A count called Gottifredo gave the place its name a thousand years ago. The estate symbol is a tortoise, after the shape of the hill. Wine has been made here since 1961, across seventeen separate vineyards. It has farmed organically since 2018 and holds the Equalitas sustainability mark. Ten visits can be booked, from a fifteen-euro tasting to a truffle hunt in the woods.

About Castello di Monterinaldi

Seen from above, the Monterinaldi hill has the shape of a tortoise shell. The estate took the tortoise as its badge, and it suits the place, because nothing here has ever moved fast. A Lombard count called Gottifredo held the hill in 1010 and gave it its name. In 1686 the castle passed to the Geppi, a Florentine family. Wine only began in 1961, when seventeen separate vineyards were planted across the estate. Paolo Nocentini bought the business in 2023.

The vines lie at Lucarelli, a hamlet in the parish of Radda in Chianti, one of the nine towns whose wine may be called Chianti Classico. Radda is among the coolest of the nine, which suits Sangiovese. The grapes ripen slowly and keep their bite. Down in the cellar the wine goes into concrete tanks and French oak casks.

The estate has farmed organic since 2018 and is certified. In 2023 it also earned Equalitas, an Italian mark that looks at the business and the land around it, not only at what goes on the vines. The olive oil is organic too.

Sangiovese leads. There is a Chianti Classico off the Boscone vineyard, a Riserva, and a Gran Selezione called Radda. Beside them sit a Tuscan red named after Count Gottifredo and another called Pesanella. There is also a white called Arnaldo, a rosé called Apr'il, a sparkling wine and a sweet Vin Santo.

Ten visits can be booked and they cover a lot of ground. Fifteen euros buys a tasting of three wines with the estate's own olive oil and a balsamic vinegar. Lunch is served in the painted nineteenth-century rooms of Villa Pesanella, in two lengths. There is a cooking course, a walk through the vineyards and olive groves, a day off-road in the hills, and at harvest time a morning picking grapes. There is also a truffle hunt in the Chianti woods with a hunter and his dog, then lunch built around what you found. Dearest of all, at six hundred euros, is a session where you blend a wine of your own after the cellar tour.
