Baglio Gibellina makes wine at Gibellina, a small town in the Trapani hills of western Sicily, halfway between the north and south coasts. Its cellars are at Gibellina Nuova. The commercial office sits a long way north, at San Bonifacio near Verona. The house wine is U... Passimiento, a soft red from Frappato and Nero d'Avola, made from grapes dried a little before pressing. The same company runs the Sogno del Sud, Baronie Coraldo and Casato di Melzi labels, and its wines reach Britain under merchant names too.
Sicily
Gibellina is not an ordinary Sicilian town. The old town was flattened by the Belice earthquake in 1968. What stands now was built a few miles away and filled with modern sculpture and architecture. The place is as well known for art as for farming.
The vineyards lie in the hills around it. This is inland western Sicily: hot, dry, and open to a steady wind off both coasts. Wind matters more than it sounds. It dries the bunches after rain and keeps rot down. That is one reason organic growing is easier here than in wetter parts of Italy.
The house wine is U... Passimiento, a red made from Frappato and Nero d'Avola. The grapes are left to dry a little before pressing, a method called appassimento. Drying concentrates the sugar. That is where the weight and the soft, jammy edge come from.
Frappato and Nero d'Avola are the two reds of southern Sicily and they do different jobs. Nero d'Avola brings the colour, the body and the dark fruit. Frappato is lighter and more perfumed, and lifts the blend so it does not sit heavy. Both grapes are native to the island.
The same company runs several other labels: Sogno del Sud for organic wines, Baronie Coraldo, and Casato di Melzi for wines from Puglia. Bottles reach Britain under merchant labels as well as under the estate's own name. The wine in your glass is not always wearing the name on this page.
There is no tasting room. The cellars at Gibellina Nuova are a working site. Enquiries go through the company's office up in the Veneto, not to a cellar door in Sicily.
