Adriana Galasso and Fausto Albanesi have run Torre dei Beati as a family estate since 1999. They farm about 52 acres of certified organic vines. The vineyards sit around Loreto Aprutino, in the inland Pescara hills of Abruzzo. Here the Tavo valley climbs from the Adriatic towards the Gran Sasso. The estate focuses on the region's three native grapes: Montepulciano, Pecorino and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. Gambero Rosso named its Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Rosa-ae Rosé of the Year, a useful signal of where the cellar's attention sits.

About Torre dei Beati
The name goes back to a 14th century fresco in the local church of Santa Maria in Piano. The painting shows a tower of the blessed. It marks the last stop for souls who climb through the trials of Judgement Day. That image sits at the heart of the labels and the working method: patient selection, vineyard by vineyard, parcel by parcel.
The current chapter began in 1999. Adriana Galasso and Fausto Albanesi took over the vines that Adriana's father Rocco had farmed since 1972. They bottled their first wine the following year. From the start they converted the whole estate to organic farming, certified under EU rules. The cellar sits in the old farmhouse at the centre of the property. An underground ageing room was added over time for the longer cycles of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva.
The vines spread across the hills of Loreto Aprutino, between 250 and 300 metres up. They grow on clay and limestone soils over a sandy base. The Adriatic sits 25 kilometres to the east. To the west stand the snow capped peaks of the Gran Sasso, the highest point of the central Apennines. Older parcels still grow on the wide pergola abruzzese. That high canopy keeps the bunches cool where the afternoon sun is fierce. Newer plantings stand in tighter rows with short Guyot pruning. The team picks by hand, in several passes through each parcel, taking only ripe and clean fruit.
The range circles the three native grapes. The Pecorino, Giocheremo con i Fiori, leans on the grape's natural acidity and aromatic edge. It spends six months on the lees in steel. The Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Bianchi Grilli, is a clean, vineyard led take on a grape that industry often waters down. Rosa-ae, the Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, is a serious dark rosato. A short spell on Montepulciano skins gives it its colour. It is less a summer drink than a structured pink for grilled fish and roast vegetables.
The reds run from a juicy Montepulciano d'Abruzzo to the single vineyard Cocciapazza. At the top sits Mazzamurello, an old vines Riserva that anchors the cellar's reputation. Torre dei Beati is one of the small group of producers that turned Loreto Aprutino into a reference point for organic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. The wines drink well young but reward time in bottle, above all the Riserva. The rosato is a useful first step into Montepulciano away from its tannic register.
