Tasting Notes

What Riccadonna's organic Prosecco tastes like

Riccadonna's own sheet gives 11% alcohol, 15 grams of sugar a litre and 5.1 grams of acidity. That is an Extra Dry style, a touch off-dry, built on green and golden apple with a ginger note.

Nose

Riccadonna's own note reads: "green and golden apple fragrance, peculiar ginger hints, some lemon zest and pear juice hints". The ginger is the odd one out for a Prosecco, and it is what sets this apart from the supermarket standard. Vinatis adds acacia honey and white flowers.

Palate

Light and soft, with fine bubbles. Riccadonna's sheet gives 15 grams of sugar a litre against 5.1 grams of acidity, so it lands just off-dry, in the Extra Dry style. At 11% alcohol it stays gentle, and the organic Glera keeps the apple and pear fruit clean rather than sweet.

Finish

Short and fresh, ending on lemon zest and a little honey, as Vinatis describes it. There is no oak and no yeasty depth: this is tank-method fizz made to taste of fruit.

Overall

The organic, vintage-dated step up in Riccadonna's Prosecco range, from a house founded in Canelli in 1921 and owned by Campari since 2004. Vivino drinkers rate it 3.8 out of 5 on a small sample of 54. Drink within two years of the 2024 harvest, chilled to 6 to 8C.

Wine fit score

How Riccadonna organic Prosecco scores on the Italian Wine Fit Score

Top marks for beginners and everyday drinking at 11% and £14.96, low for the cellar. A party and aperitif fizz, not a wine to lay down.

Best intro to this style 9.2/10

At 11% with soft bubbles, apple and pear fruit and a touch of sugar, this is about the easiest Italian wine to start on.

Best everyday bottle 8.0/10

Low alcohol and a mid-teens price make it an any-night aperitif, held back only by the £15 tag against supermarket fizz.

Best with food 7.8/10

Light, fizzy and just off-dry at 15 grams of sugar, it handles aperitif nibbles, seafood, pizza and mild spice, but not red meat.

Best value 7.0/10

£14.96 buys organic grapes and a single-vintage bottling, about £5 over a basic Prosecco DOC and in line with other branded organic Prosecco. Judged on price band, as no category average exists yet.

Best for an occasion 4.5/10

Organic and vintage-dated from a brand founded in 1921, but still a Prosecco DOC from a big group rather than a Franciacorta or a Valdobbiadene DOCG.

Best for cellar 1.5/10

Tank-method Prosecco is made for freshness; the merchant gives the 2024 a two-year window and there is nothing to gain from keeping it.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

What sits behind a £15 organic Prosecco from Riccadonna

Prosecco DOC allows 18 tonnes of grapes a hectare, more than double Barolo's, which is why Prosecco stays cheap. Organic farming and a vintage label push Riccadonna's above the under-£10 crowd.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Prosecco is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

Drivers

Main factor
Tank-fermented fizz from a Campari-owned brand
  1. 01

Certified organic grapes, at least 85% Glera

    Cost up

The grapes carry the EU organic leaf, which means lower yields and more hand work in the vineyard than a standard Prosecco DOC. It is the main reason this sits at £14.96 when a basic Prosecco DOC sells for under £10.

  2. 02

    Tank-fermented fizz from a Campari-owned brand

    Cost down

Riccadonna makes the bubbles in temperature-controlled tanks rather than in each bottle, the quick method every Prosecco uses. The scale of a Campari Group brand founded in 1921 keeps the cost per bottle low.

  3. 03

    A vintage-dated (millesimato) bottling

    Cost up

At least 85% of the wine comes from the single 2024 harvest rather than a blend of years. That limits how much the brand can bottle under this label and adds a small premium.

  4. 04

    UK VAT and alcohol duty

    Cost up

On £14.96, VAT is £2.49 and duty on an 11% sparkling wine adds roughly £2.50, so around £5 of the price goes to HMRC before Vinatis takes a margin.

Food Pairing

Apple, ginger and soft fizz: dishes that fit Riccadonna's Prosecco

Riccadonna's own list runs from aperitif nibbles to Mediterranean seafood, curry chicken, pizza and burrata. The 15 grams of sugar make it friendlier to mild spice than a bone-dry fizz.

Acidity matching Strong match

Fried and salty aperitif nibbles

The bubbles and 5.1 grams of acidity scrub fried, salty food off the tongue, so each bite tastes fresh again. Riccadonna's own serving list starts with the aperitif, and this is where an 11% Prosecco shines.

Try with: Arancini · Gnocco fritto · Panzerotti · Onion bhaji · More pairings →

Sweet balance Strong match

Mild curries and gently sweet Asian dishes

The 15 grams of sugar in this Extra Dry cushion mild chilli and match a creamy, slightly sweet sauce, which a bone-dry fizz cannot do. Riccadonna itself suggests curry chicken and spiced chickpea meatballs.

Try with: Chicken korma · Butter chicken · Sweet and sour chicken · Prawn Tempura · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Fresh cheese, pizza and tomato salads

Soft cheese and olive oil coat the mouth; the fizz and green-apple acidity cut through them. Riccadonna lists burrata, ricotta and pizza, and a caprese salad brings the tomato acidity into line with the wine.

Try with: Insalata Caprese · Pizza Margherita · Focaccia · Torta pasqualina · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Simple seafood

Salty shellfish makes the apple and pear fruit taste sweeter, and the low 11% alcohol never overpowers a delicate fish. Riccadonna suggests Mediterranean seafood mains, and mussels or a seafood fregula fit that brief.

Try with: Impepata di cozze · Fregula ai frutti di mare · Fish and Chips · Prawn Tempura · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Good match

Lightly sweet bakes and brunch

The apple, pear and honey notes echo a fruit-led bake, and the touch of sugar keeps the wine from tasting sour beside it. Riccadonna names Easter cake; keep to lightly sweet bakes, since a rich dessert would flatten the fizz.

Try with: Pastiera napoletana · Panettone · Eton Mess · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Hot chilli, red meat and heavy sauces

Hot chilli makes the bubbles feel prickly and the 15 grams of sugar turn cloying. A light 11% fizz simply vanishes next to steak, ragu or a rich braise; those want a red like Valpolicella or Chianti.

Skip with: Chicken madras · Fiorentina steak · Ragu alla bolognese · Crispy chilli beef · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Not one for the cellar

Common Questions

This Millesimato Biologico is. It is made from at least 85% certified organic Glera grapes plus other local grapes allowed by the Prosecco DOC rules, and the bottle carries the EU organic leaf. Riccadonna's standard Prosecco DOC Extra Dry is not organic.

Extra Dry, which in Prosecco means slightly off-dry. Riccadonna's sheet gives 15 grams of sugar a litre, balanced by 5.1 grams of acidity, so it tastes fresh rather than sweet. A Brut Prosecco has under 12 grams.

That at least 85% of the wine comes from one harvest, here 2024. Most Prosecco blends several years, so a vintage date is a small mark of quality.

£14.96 a bottle at Vinatis for the 2024, the one UK stockist we track. A basic Prosecco DOC sells for under £10, so you pay about £5 extra for organic grapes and a vintage bottling.

Riccadonna was founded in 1921 in Canelli, Piedmont, by Clara and Ottavio Riccadonna, and has been part of the Campari Group since 2004. The Prosecco itself comes from the Prosecco DOC zone in north-east Italy, as the law requires.

Aperitif snacks, fried nibbles, pizza, fresh cheese like burrata and simple seafood. Riccadonna also suggests mild curry chicken, and the touch of sugar handles gentle spice well. Serve it at 6 to 8C.
