Overall

A fresh, dry Pecorino for fish suppers and aperitifs, to drink young: we would open the 2025 now and by 2028. Falstaff scored this wine's 2023 and 2024 at 89 points each, and found lime, elderflower, peach and grapefruit in the 2024.

How Casalfarneto Quirico scores

Best with food and Best intro to this style lead its scores. It is a fresh, dry Falerio Pecorino at about £17 a bottle.

Best with food 8.0/10

Fresh and dry with a savoury edge, it suits fish and seafood, vegetable soups, medium-structured cheeses and olive all'ascolana, the producer's own suggestions. Hot chilli is the clash to avoid.

Best intro to this style 7.6/10

Fruit, white flowers and acacia on the nose, then a fresh, savoury, medium-bodied palate: an easy first taste of Pecorino.

Best everyday bottle 7.0/10

At about £17, dry and fresh, it suits a weeknight plate of fish or a bowl of vegetable soup.

Best value 6.4/10

At about £17 it costs close to the middle of what Pecorino whites cost in UK shops. That buys a dry Falerio Pecorino whose 2023 and 2024 each scored 89 points from Falstaff.

Best for an occasion 3.5/10

A young Falerio DOC white, best as an aperitif or with a fish supper rather than saved for a big celebration.

Best for cellar 2.2/10

A young Falerio Pecorino, aged three months in steel tanks and at least two in bottle. We would drink the 2025 by 2028 rather than keep it.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Casalfarneto, from Verdicchio country to the Piceno hills

Casalfarneto sits at Serra de' Conti, in the Verdicchio hills of Ancona province, and made its first Fontevecchia and Grancasale from the 1995 harvest. Quirico is its Falerio Pecorino, from hillsides in Ascoli Piceno province in the south of the Marche.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Falerio is in the DOC tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

UK duty and VAT
  1. 01

    UK duty and VAT

    Cost up

Of a £17.10 bottle, about £5.95 is tax: £3.10 of duty on a 13.5% wine at £30.62 per litre of pure alcohol, and £2.85 of VAT.

  2. 02

A tighter cap on the grape crop for Falerio Pecorino

    Cost up

As a Falerio Pecorino, Quirico may come from at most 11 tonnes of grapes per hectare, against 13 for the blended Falerio white. The lower ceiling limits how much wine each hectare can give.

  3. 03

Three months in steel tanks, then at least two in bottle

    Cost down

Quirico rests three months in steel tanks and at least two months in bottle. Casalfarneto's Cimaio, by contrast, is fermented half in small wooden barrels, spends a year in wood and steel, then 12 to 18 months in bottle.

  4. 04

    A mid-priced wine in Casalfarneto's own range

    Cost down

At Casalfarneto's own online shop, Quirico costs the same as its Fontevecchia Verdicchio and about a third of the price of its Cimaio white.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Fish, olive all'ascolana and soups with Casalfarneto Quirico

Casalfarneto suggests Quirico as an aperitif and with fish and seafood, vegetable soups, medium-structured cheeses and olive all'ascolana. A fresh, savoury Falerio Pecorino suits all of them. Keep it away from hot chilli.

Acidity matching Strong match

Mussels and Adriatic fish stews

Casalfarneto matches this Falerio Pecorino with fish and seafood. Its freshness and savoury edge lift sweet mussels and a tomato fish stew, so each mouthful tastes clean rather than heavy.

Try with: Impepata di cozze · Cozze arraganate · Brodetto alla giuliese · Brodetto alla Termolese · More pairings →

Fat cutting Strong match

Olive all'ascolana and fried starters

Casalfarneto suggests the classic olive all'ascolana, breaded olives stuffed with meat, with this Falerio Pecorino. The wine's freshness cuts through breadcrumbs, frying oil and cheese, so the next bite tastes as good as the first.

Try with: Olive all'ascolana · Arancini · Gnocco fritto · Panzerotti · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Medium-structured cheeses

Casalfarneto suggests medium-structured cheeses with this Falerio Pecorino. The salt in the cheese tames the wine's slightly bitter finish and brings its fruit forward.

Try with: Frico · Lancashire Cheese · Cheese board

Body matching Good match

Vegetable soups with bread or rice

A medium-bodied Falerio Pecorino has enough weight for a soup thickened with bread or rice, without burying the vegetables. Its freshness also stands up to the tomato in pappa al pomodoro.

Try with: Risi e bisi · Pappa al Pomodoro · Pane Cotto · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Hot chilli dishes

Chilli heat makes a 13.5% Falerio Pecorino taste hotter and drowns its acacia and white-flower aromas. Keep fiery curries and stir-fries for another bottle.

Skip with: Chicken jalfrezi · Szechuan chicken · Kung pao chicken · Pairing guide →

Drinking + cellar

Drinking Casalfarneto Quirico 2025 young

Common Questions

It is a dry, medium-bodied white with fruit, white flowers, acacia and broom on the nose. The palate is fresh and savoury, and the finish is fine, persistent and slightly bitter.

It is the Pecorino type of the Falerio DOC, made in the provinces of Ascoli Piceno and Fermo in the south of the Marche. The rules require at least 85% Pecorino grapes and a total alcohol of at least 12%.

The bunches are pressed gently, and the juice is fermented at a controlled temperature. The wine then rests three months in steel tanks and at least two months in bottle. The grapes come from hillsides in Ascoli Piceno province, on hard, clayey soil facing south-east.

Casalfarneto suggests it as an aperitif and with fish and seafood, vegetable soups and medium-structured cheeses. It also suggests the classic olive all'ascolana, breaded olives stuffed with meat. Avoid hot chilli, which makes a 13.5% white taste hotter.

One shop on this page sells the 2025, at about £17 a bottle, so there is no price to compare here. That is near the middle of what Pecorino whites cost in UK shops.

Drink it now and by 2028. It is a young white aged in steel tanks and bottle, and we would open it while its fruit and white-flower aromas are fresh.
