Palate

Light, very dry and fresh at 12%, with crisp acidity and no oak at all. The wine goes from tank to bottle, so the fruit stays clean and the texture stays lean. A herby, slightly bitter edge on the finish is typical of Cortese and is what Majestic means by herbaceous.

Finish

Short to moderate, clean and citrussy, ending on that herby bitterness.

Wine fit score

How Definition Gavi scores for food, value and everyday drinking

Four scores out of ten. It rates highest for someone new to Italian wine, then with food, then as an everyday bottle, and well on value at £10.50 in a mixed six.

Best intro to this style 8.6/10

Clean, dry, light and sealed with a screwcap. A safe first Italian white at £10.50 in a mixed six.

Best with food 8.5/10

Shellfish, pesto, white fish, cured meat and fried starters all fit. Only red meat and chilli do not.

Best everyday bottle 8.2/10

At £10.50 in a mixed six and 12%, this is a weeknight white.

Best value 7.5/10

£14.50 alone is ordinary for a Gavi di Gavi; £10.50 in a mixed six is a good price for the real thing.

Best for an occasion 3.5/10

A pleasant, correct Gavi under an own-label. Not a bottle that marks an event.

Best for cellar 1.0/10

Made in tank for freshness. Drink it within two or three years.

Scoring is rule-based and deterministic. The model and weightings are documented in our Wine Fit Score methodology.

The disciplinare, the place, the label

Cortese from the town of Gavi: what the DOCG and the double name mean

The Gavi DOCG covers all or part of eleven towns in the province of Alessandria, thirty kilometres from the sea on the edge of the Ligurian hills. Gavi di Gavi means the grapes grew in the town of Gavi itself. Araldica makes this one at La Battistina, on the road from Gavi to Novi Ligure.

01

DOC, DOCG, IGT: what the badges mean

Italian wine law sorts bottles into a pyramid. DOCG sits at the top: tightly drawn boundaries, prescribed grapes, mandatory ageing, government tasting before release. DOC is the same idea with looser thresholds. IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) is broader still, requiring only that 85% of the grapes come from the named territory.

Gavi/Cortese di Gavi is in the DOCG tier. That is not a quality verdict, it is a description of how much freedom the producer has at vinification and ageing.

A cooperative of growers, not a single estate
  1. 01

A cooperative of growers, not a single estate

    Cost down

Araldica began in 1954 as fifty growers pooling their grapes at Castel Boglione and is now a group with several estates. Scale like that spreads the cost of the winery and the sales team across a lot of wine.

  2. 02

Tank only, no oak, no cellar time

    Cost down

Majestic says Araldica keeps the wine in tank until bottling. No barrels to buy and no stock waiting in a cellar.

  3. 03

Grapes from the town of Gavi itself

    Cost up

Gavi di Gavi may only use grapes grown in the town of Gavi, one of eleven towns in the DOCG. Land there is the dearest in the zone, and La Battistina grows Cortese and nothing else.

  4. 04

    Majestic's mixed-six price

    Cost down

Majestic sells it at £14.50 alone and £10.50 a bottle in any six. The shop's discount, not the winery, sets the low end of the price.

  5. 05

    UK duty and VAT

    Cost up

A 12% wine carries about £2.75 of duty on the February 2026 rates, and VAT takes a fifth of the price. Roughly £5.15 of the £14.50 is tax, and about £4.50 of the £10.50.

Perfect Pairings

Dishes that go with this wine

Food Pairing

Light, dry and 12%: what fits this Gavi

Majestic puts it with seafood, shellfish and pasta with pesto. Vivino's list is shellfish, pasta, starters, lean fish and cured meat. Light, fresh, salty food is the thread.

Acidity matching Strong match

Shellfish and mussels

Majestic's own match is seafood and shellfish, and Vivino's list starts with shellfish. A dry, lean white with crisp acidity does the job a squeeze of lemon does on a plate of mussels.

Try with: Impepata di cozze · Fregula ai frutti di mare · Cozze arraganate · Polpo alla pignata · More pairings →

Aromatic bridge Strong match

Pesto and Ligurian food

Majestic suggests pasta with pesto, and Gavi sits only thirty kilometres from the Ligurian coast. The wine's herby edge meets basil and olive oil head on, and its freshness cuts the richness of the cheese and pine nuts.

Try with: Trofie al pesto · Focaccia Genovese · Focaccia di Recco · Torta pasqualina · More pairings →

Body matching Good match

Lean white fish

Vivino lists lean fish. A light, delicate fish needs a light, delicate wine, and this one is exactly that at 12% with no oak.

Try with: Baccala Mantecato · Polenta e schie · Brodetto alla giuliese · Baccala a Ciuredda · More pairings →

Salt balance Good match

Cured meat and Piedmont starters

Cured meat is on Vivino's list for this wine. Salt makes a lean white taste rounder and fruitier, and there is no tannin here to turn bitter against it.

Try with: Vitello Tonnato · Gnocco fritto · Crescia · Peperoni Cruschi · More pairings →

Fat cutting Good match

Fried starters

Fried food leaves oil on the palate, and crisp acidity washes it off between bites. A cold, lean Gavi is the classic glass for a plate of fried things.

Try with: Arancini · Pizza Fritta · Frittata di maccheroni · Fish and Chips · More pairings →

Avoid Clash

Skip red meat and hot chilli

A light, dry white like this vanishes next to steak or braised beef. Hot chilli does the reverse and makes the wine taste thin and sour. Keep it for fish, vegetables and pasta.

Skip with: Fiorentina steak · Brasato al Barolo · Chicken madras · Szechuan beef · Pairing guide →

Common Questions

Araldica, the Piedmont cooperative that fifty growers founded in 1954 under a village priest, don Carlo Montrucchio. It makes this Gavi at its La Battistina estate on the road between Gavi and Novi Ligure, an estate of Cortese vines only.

That the grapes come from the town of Gavi itself, not just the wider zone. The Gavi DOCG covers all or part of eleven towns in the province of Alessandria, and only wine from the town of Gavi may add its name twice.

Cortese, on its own. The first vineyards planted only with Cortese went in at Gavi in 1856, on estates owned by the Marquis Cambiaso, according to the Gavi consortium.

Clean apple and pear, then lemon and lime, with a herby, faintly bitter finish. It is light and very dry at 12%. On Vivino the Definition Gavi averages 3.7 from 546 ratings.

Seafood, shellfish and pasta with pesto, which is Majestic's own suggestion. Vivino adds lean fish, starters and cured meat.

£14.50 a bottle at Majestic, or £10.50 a bottle when you buy any six wines. It is a Majestic exclusive in the UK.
