Villa La Ripa
Villa La Ripa is a wine estate built around a Renaissance villa at Antria, in the hills just north-east of Arezzo. The Luzzi family bought it in 1992, and Saverio Luzzi, a neurologist from Arezzo, still leads it. Its vines grow in the Colli Aretini part of the Chianti area. They give Sangiovese reds, Super Tuscan blends, two whites, a rosé and a sparkling rosé. The estate makes its own olive oil too. Visitors can book tastings, cellar tours, long lunches and a truffle hunt.

The Luzzi family bought Villa La Ripa in 1992. Saverio Luzzi is a neurologist, and he says making wine is how he recharges after his work. He brings the same scientific method to the wine that he uses in his clinic. His daughter Claudia was seven when the family moved in. On her first visit she called the place Tiratari, after a dreamland in a fairy tale she was reading, and the first wine still carries that name. She later trained as a pharmacist and a sommelier, and she makes a line of skin creams from the estate's grapes. Silvia Caneschi, the managing director, runs the cellar from day to day, with the winemaker Alessio Bandinelli and the vineyard adviser Marco Pierucci.
The villa is far older than the winery. The estate traces its first owner to a Roman, Marcus Peconius, in the second century AD. In the Middle Ages the Ricoveri family built a fortified house here, and its tower still stands. The Gualtieri family gave the villa the shape you see today. Raffaello Gualtieri, the Pope's envoy to Portugal, built it in 1558. After Napoleon's troops seized it, the Ubertini family of Arezzo bought it at auction. Early in the last century the Bucchi family planted the oldest vines that still grow on the land.
Those vines are more than 100 years old. Sangiovese, Trebbiano and Malvasia grow in the same rows as old Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, an unusual mix for a vineyard this old. Newer plots are planted closer together, to make the vines compete. The range has one Chianti DOCG, Fonte dell'Angelo. The rest is sold as Toscana IGT, which has looser rules on grapes, so the family can blend Sangiovese with plenty of Cabernet or Syrah. Psyco is the best known. It is a half-and-half blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged for a year in French oak, and its name is a nod to Saverio's medical work. Peconio is pure Sangiovese and takes its name from the Roman owner. Tiratari adds a quarter of Syrah to Sangiovese. The whites, Auretium and Namastè, are made from Malvasia and Trebbiano.
The family built a new cellar to give the tanks more room. It has a curved front covered in climbing plants and a vaulted hall inside, with columns like a church. In October 2023 the Movimento Turismo del Vino Toscana, the region's wine tourism group, gave the estate one of its awards for wineries set in a fine landscape. The tasting room sits above the cellar, with glass doors that open onto the vines and a line of cypress trees.
The estate welcomes visitors all year and sells its visits on its own website. They range from a 90 minute walk and tasting of four wines to lunches, a sunset dinner and a truffle hunt with a trained dog. On one tour the owner opens the villa's private rooms, including the old sacristy and the family chapel. The estate is open on weekdays and on Saturdays, and on Sundays by appointment. Book a set time before you go.
