Fattoria San Michele a Torri
Fattoria San Michele a Torri is a farm and winery in the hills of Scandicci, about 15 km southwest of Florence. It has been certified organic since 1993 and belongs to Paolo Nocentini. Most of its vines grow around the farm, in the Chianti Colli Fiorentini area, and a smaller block lies in Chianti Classico. The farm also makes Laudemio olive oil and raises Cinta Senese pigs. Tastings, lunches, a picnic in the vines and a family farm day can all be booked online.
Book a visitAbout Fattoria San Michele a Torri
San Michele a Torri is a hamlet in the Val di Pesa hills, southwest of Florence. It takes its name from a castle first recorded in 1126 and pulled down in 1324. The farm grew out of a villa already on record in 1535. Its brick-vaulted cellars, a chapel from the 1700s and a neo-Gothic well can still be seen. In the summer of 1944 New Zealand and German troops fought here for a week, on the last hills before Florence. The estate says about 120 villagers sat out the fighting among the barrels in its cellar. A memorial to the New Zealand soldiers stands beside the farm.
Paolo Nocentini owns the farm today. He steered it towards organic farming, and it has been certified since 1993. In 2023 it also earned Equalitas, an Italian certificate that checks how a business treats its staff and the land, not only its vines. Solar panels went up in 2007 and a biomass plant in 2011. The estate says the two now cover all its energy needs. Also in 2023, the farm bought Castello di Monterinaldi, in Radda in Chianti.
The land runs across two Chianti zones. Around the farm the soil is clay, which gives lighter reds to drink young. The flagship comes from here: a red of the Chianti Colli Fiorentini DOCG, first made in 1987. It is mostly Sangiovese, with a little Canaiolo, Colorino and Merlot. San Giovanni '97 is a Riserva of pure Sangiovese from one small vineyard. A smaller block inside Chianti Classico sits on stony sandstone, which gives fuller reds that keep for longer. From there come Tenuta La Gabbiola, a Chianti Classico and a Riserva, and Poggio Brandi, a Gran Selezione.
Murtas is the estate's top red, sold as an IGT Toscana and made from Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It is named after Murtas Terzuoli, the farm's cellar manager for many years. The whites include a Vermentino and La Luna, from a vineyard shaped like a half moon. For the Vin Santo, the grapes dry on racks first. The wine then spends up to five years in small barrels of oak, cherry, chestnut and mulberry wood.
Olive oil matters as much as wine here. The best oil carries the Laudemio name, a label shared by about twenty Tuscan estates, Frescobaldi and Antinori among them. The farm also raises Cinta Senese pigs in its woods, keeps hens and bees, and bakes bread from its own grain. Every tasting starts in the cellars and the orciaia, the farm's old olive oil store. Lunch and dinner are served at L'Unico, the estate's restaurant, a short drive down the hill. There are no rooms, so visitors stay in Florence or nearby.
