Castello di Poppiano

Castello di Poppiano stands on a ridge above Montespertoli, in the hills south-west of Florence. The Guicciardini family has held it for more than 800 years, and Ferdinando Guicciardini runs the estate today. Vines and olives cover the slopes below the castle: 140 hectares of vineyard and 12,000 olive trees. The wine is Chianti Colli Fiorentini, with a Riserva and a Vin Santo, and the oil is a Laudemio. Tours and tastings run by appointment, and scooter and bike tours from Florence stop here.

About Castello di Poppiano

The Guicciardini were a leading family of medieval Florence, and Poppiano has been theirs for at least nine centuries: a document of 1199 already records it. The castle began around the year 1000 as a fortress with three rings of walls. In 1384 Luigi Guicciardini bought the farm of La Costa on the hill below it, and the family has farmed here since. Wine and oil were already being made at Poppiano in the 1400s. Francesco Guicciardini, the historian, was one of the family; he wrote part of his History of Italy at Poppiano in the 1530s.

Ferdinando Guicciardini inherited the castle and its land in 1962 and still runs it. The next generation, Bernardo and his son Paolo, are set to follow him. The estate covers 265 hectares on the ridge between the Pesa and Virginio valleys, from 140 to 300 metres up. 140 hectares are vines and 37 are olives, about 12,000 trees. The soil is a stony clay that drains well.

The wines are Chianti Colli Fiorentini, the Chianti zone of the hills around Florence. The vineyards on the right bank of the Virginio go into the Chianti and its Riserva, aged in large oak casks. The left bank gives the estate's IGT reds, aged in small barrels. There is a Vin Santo made from Malvasia grapes dried in the castle tower. The olive oil is a Laudemio, pressed early in November, and it has twice won the national Ercole Olivario competition.

The family also owns two other estates: Massi di Mandorlaia in the Maremma, for Morellino di Scansano, and Belvedere Campoli in Chianti Classico, bought in 2015. Visits to Poppiano start at 10am or 3pm, any day by appointment, booked at least two working days ahead. Saturdays need three days' notice; Sundays carry a surcharge and need a group of six. The full tour takes two hours and ends with four wines, the Laudemio oil, bread, cold cuts, cheese and Vin Santo with biscuits. There is a shorter one-hour tour and a half-hour tasting, and the wine shop is open Monday to Saturday.
