Buccia Nera
Buccia Nera is a family farm in the hills north of Arezzo, in eastern Tuscany. The Mancini family grows grapes and olives here, and the farm is certified organic. Most of the wine is Chianti, made mainly from Sangiovese in three styles. There is also an orange wine, a sparkling wine finished in the bottle and a red with no added sulphites. Visitors can book a cellar tour and tasting from Monday to Saturday, or a picnic among the vines. The estate's stone farmhouse holds five holiday apartments.

About Buccia Nera
The farm is named after a nickname. Amadio, great-grandfather of the family that runs it today, spent such long days in the sun that his skin turned very dark. People knew him as Buccia Nera, which means "black peel". The farm dates from the end of the 1800s, and the family has worked this land for more than five generations. Until the year 2000, it sold its grapes and made a single wine for the local market.
That year a new wine project began, with many wines from different vineyards and grapes. In 2004 the family built a new cellar to replace the first one, which was made only of concrete vats. Today three sisters, Anastasia, Alessia and Roberta Mancini, run the estate, with the oenologist Sandro Nalli as technical adviser. For 20 years, Anastasia says, three words have guided her work: desire, patience and constancy. The most important thing her father taught her was to respect time and the seasons, which cannot be forced. The wine she calls her own is Pa'Ro Orange, a white from Trebbiano and Grechetto. The grapes stay on their skins for the whole fermentation, which turns the wine deep gold with an orange glint.
The vines cover 40 hectares, about 56 football pitches, on hills from 350 to 600 metres up. Sangiovese is the main grape. The soils range from clay, gravel, sand and river deposits to steep, rocky slopes. From their fifth year the vineyards are left under grass, which helps stop the soil washing away. Woods, olive groves and orchards break up the vines, and everything is farmed to organic rules. In 1985 a hard frost put most of the olive trees at risk, and the family replanted the damaged groves rather than give them up. The olives, of the local Frantoio, Moraiolo, Leccino and Pendolino varieties, are picked while still green and pressed within 24 hours.
Chianti is the heart of the cellar. The young Chianti is fresh and fruity. Sassocupo is a Chianti Superiore aged for a year in large oak casks. The Tenuta di Campriano Chianti Riserva spends around three years ageing. Fermentation starts on its own, and the wines are left to settle in their own time rather than being forced clear. The range also includes Confondo, a sparkling wine bottled before it finishes fermenting and sold with its yeast still inside. Acinoso is a Sangiovese with no added sulphites. The Vin Santo, Tuscany's classic sweet wine, comes from grapes dried for four months and has its own ageing room in the cellar.
Each wine tasting starts with a guided walk through the vineyard and the cellar, in English or Italian. The choice runs from a simple two-wine tasting to three older vintages, and there is a picnic among the vines from April to October. The five apartments in the farmhouse share a pool and a barbecue area, with olive groves and vineyards all around. In summer the estate hosts Calici di Stelle evenings with the Movimento Turismo del Vino, pairing a dinner of local food with stargazing.
